I've heard Otis Campbell played some mean harp in the county jail.

Bob: There are some guitarists who I know that have suggested that 85 watts is sufficient for a bass player as well.

Jim, are you sure that pistol-whipping reference is a song lyric? Sounds more like a line from a David Crosby interview...

There's been a few versions of the particualr song over the years, Stones, did one, Big Bill Brunsey did one, and Muddy Waters does the best version !!!

I'd add Jimmy Reed and Robert Johnson to that list of blues artist essentials. And, while it's not strictly blues, I always kind of heard Louis Jordan and his Tympani Five as a "bridge" between jazz, blues and R&B. "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby" is one of the best songs ever.

As to playing a song "record perfect", I'd go along with the other comments - if it's a core part of the song then stay close, otherwise, if people want to hear the record, let 'em go buy it! That's a paraphrase of Buddy Guy from when one of my brothers went to his club in Chicago.

I can't get the "pistol" lyric, but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess it wasn't Pat Boone. ;)
