I'm not a big fusion fan but that's some really good stuff you got there Jeffrey, great fretless playing.

I always figured that if you are not supposed to play all the way up the neck then why are there frets there ... every once in a while I will throw in a lead and play it faster than my lead player ...

None of you would happen to know Bassically (Black Sabbath song...intro to N.I.B) would you? I was wondering how hard it is. I dont wana set myself up for another failure right after that lol.

Heh, I've been wanting to learn that solo too. I tried to learn it by ear but I got annoyed and didn't bother. Thanks for the post. I'm glad this thing plays the song because I can't read tabs very well.

"I decided i cant do it."

Hey, Jacob, keep trying with "Freewill". It took me months to do that right and I still mess up now and then when I play it. Plus, you could always learn the "Different Stages" and "Rio" solos. They're good ones too. Like I said earlier, I mix the two up for an easier solo (more fun that way and I'm lazy). I did learn the "real" one but I mix them up. That gives you the choice with what you want to play and you're not stuck with just the "official" version.

Here is what I play:
The solo is cut into six "parts". I don't know the correct musical term for it, so I'll refer to them as "parts" (measures?). The first one I do is from the "PW" album. That is the part he hasn't changed and where it is just bass. The second part I do from the "PW" album again. The third I steal from the "DS" and "Rio" albums. It is very fast, but it stays in a 3 fret box (a very complicated box). The other three I take from "DS" and "Rio". The fourth and fifth from "DS" and "Rio" are prety much the same thing, minor differences. The sixth part he changed just a little bit over the years, going up the neck with the octaves instead of down. I choose to go up.

That might be easier for you (if you have any idea what I was talking about). It might not be perfect but it is still filled with Ged's moves so it is written by Geddy Lee but arranged by you.

If you're stuck with learning the official solo, do the Powertabs thing. Edit it and slow it down. Play the slowed down version. After awhile gradually speed it up to what you're comfortable with. Keep doing that until you're at the right speed. I did that with YYZ. Well not with the Power Tabs but with the real song and Cool Edit.

I hope that helps just a little bit. Image

Also, I could use the Tab for YYZ... I still can't do the first two of three solos correctly.

If you can't read tabs then number by number put a letter note equivelant on the paper ... this helped me the first time I tried to read a tab ...

Hey bob can you send that How to piece to me 2. Thanks.

What i do to read tabs is i just rewrite it all by myself. All those numbers screw me up. I agree with jeff. But you know its no wonder that i dont know a damn person who can tell you what note they are playing. Its really sad. However... they can tell you what key the chord is in. They cant tell you why tho. Its funny.

Anyways. Im not gonna give up on the solo all together. I think im gonna work on some speed training and go back to it. Its just i dont wana spend weeks and weeks on this when its just pissing me off. So i figured id just not worry about it for awhile.

Bassically i wanted to learn for awhile. Plus N.I.B. is an easier song. I wanted something i could play with my friends. And lets face it...theres not many 16 year olds playing Rush.
