I remember that, but I thought he was asking us if we had ever heard one, and by that implying that we really didn't know what we were talking about, that most of us had never realy heard one. If so he's probably right too but I would buy one anyway.
What's the difference between the Chicago and the Skyline? Skyline a budget bass?

Jeffrey I couldn't get the rhythm right of the cellos: booom bump boooom bump! played quickly but actually it's nar duh nar duh nar duh.

You are probably right about the JH remark. I probably misinterpreted him.

Yes, the Skyline is made in Korea by Cort. None of the Skyline models are truly second rate though.

A few years ago I was looking for a well made hollowbody and ended up purchasing a U.S. Lakland. Although John Hall tried to scare us off with the possible retail price of a new 4005, the U.S. Lakland is probably in the same ball park price wise.
A couple of years ago you could have made the arguement that a new 4005 would cost in the neighbourhood of a vintage one, (when they were in the $2500-3000 range), so why not go find a vintage 4005? With the skyrocketing prices in recent years, most of us would be hesitant about plunking down $4K+ for an original 4005. A reissue in the $2-3K range? Sign me up!

I thought that JH also made reference to the fact that the 4005 was never played by a well known artist and that would have a negative affect on sales.

Nick St. Nick of Steppenwolf played a 4005. I play a 4005WB, oh that's right, you said well known, never mind (I am well known among the forum members)!

JH made the reference I repeated it from memory. Of course this could just be a senior moment!

If you want to try a real sweet semi-acoustic while we are waiting for the 4005 reissue: Gibson Les Paul signature. They do show up on ebay from time to time. Even the Epi Jack Casady is said to be very nice.

I like the old Gibson EB-2's also.

Try one of these in the mean time. Great upright vibe! Hand made and a 6-8 week turn around.

Rob Allens are very nice, so are Rick Turner Renaissance basses. But still, they are not Rickenbackers!

Just for the record I do know what a 4005 sounds and plays like but sadly don't have either of mine from the old days.

I prefer the 4005 and its 360 like curves over the WB models.

That said I would order an 4005 MG if they ever become available as a reissue model, although I would wonder if they would be available in COY option models too.

I remember John asking if I'd ever heard the 4005. The answer was yes. I have heard it a couple of times and Mani of the Stone Roses is probably most remembered for his use of his customized 4005 - I have seen pictures of it and I think it was a mapleglo but then guitarist John Squire got hold of it and did a 'Pollock' to it!

I think it was used a lot around the time of their seminal debut 'The Stone Roses' check out the tracks for the rich, low rumblings. Try an listen to 'I wanna be adored' 'Waterfall' and 'I am the Resurrection' if you've never heard their stuff.

I love that tone, rich, warm but with bite. As much as I love my 4003's I think the added warmth would be a good option to have live and in the studio.

If they were reissued I'd probably get 2 one to keep and then a player. My Midnight Blue 4003 is battle scarred but it's there to be played where as the Montezuma is back up and still in amazing condition as I've probably played it less than 10 times!

I like the 4005 better than the WB also and the first one I ever saw was on MTV years ago but can't remember the band, it was a mapleglo and I thought it was the most beautiful bass I'd ever seen.

Bob: Wasn't that the bassist for your favourite artist, Moms Mabley?
