I just spent two weeks away from playing. Went to put my 64 back together and forgot to take the bridge...

I could not wait to get back to opening cases....

When I'm not playing much I get obsessed with music, listening to it, buying CD's and LP's etc.

Yeah, me too, Bob. In fact I remember Flea saying that he considers listening to good music as a real good way to improve your playing!
Sometimes I'll try to play, or work on something I've made, and it doesn't feel "right" no matter how often I practice it.
As a matter of fact, I've almost always had good luck after taking a break from playing, and really getting obsessed with some band, or music that I like. It could be something totally void of bass guitar(worldly music).
All I know is that my playing somehow improves, and the bass is fun again(strange how the subconscious works)

Yeah. I dont have a ric atm. But im really looking forward to getting one. Im looking around. I didnt wana buy one b4 i played it. So that kinda ment not buying it online. But after talking to my bass teacher ill probly just buy one off here. So now i gotta find one i really like. But yeah when i get a new bass it never leaves my hands for like a week. AFter that i normally get back into the swing of changing in and out like crazy. Im not sure why but ill be playing one and then im like oh i wana play this song. I think thats kinda good tho. Learning to tell the differnce in the basses.
Anyways yeah i think the Ric well get me excited alot more.

I love RHCP. Flea is a really good bassist. Im practicing slap stuff right now. The 1st song im gonna learn is Higher Ground. After i get the slap thing down ill probly get real into RHCP. I think that would be something fun to jam with. But i think id have to agree. Listening to the same thing doesnt really help you. And like if you really listn to something like "The Ability to Swing". Simple bass line but its hard to play cause its on the upbeat and swing. My teacher has me play alot of stuff like that. We are learning a song by Philosopher Kings right now. I think its name is Lay my body down. Its one of those songs that no matter how often you sit there and play it. It may not help at all. You just have to sit there and listn to it. Get the groove down and listn to the drums and bass and all that. My first song like this took me forever to learn. But after you know what to listn to it comes easier.

Pick up a trombone study book. One of my former teachers made me do that and the funny part is, I played trombone in high school and came within a whisker of qualifying for the Navy School of Music on it. I was passing with flying colors til he pulled out some Glenn Miller! I had never played dance band music(small backward midwest town). So, when I finished the piece, the man asked if I had ever played dance tunes and I said no. He said if I would stay in Chicago for 6 months and take lessons from this fellow he knew, he would gurantee me a spot! With no money and being from a town of 100 people, Chicago for 6 months was out of the question.

All that to say, look at some trombone stuff. I will add a trombone part to a tune when appropriate. It's usually on ballads and such where something else is needed in a couple of the "spaces".
