Pete did a few solo albums that as I recall were very good. Didn't he record "Pure and Easy" as well? Daltry has the chops for the Who, but Pete's voice suits his own songs as well.

And as I've stated before, their tunes made it onto radio out here on the left coast in the '60's. And of course, since Tommy and Who's next, have been in constant rotation on FM.

Yeah, Pete did "Pure and Easy" on his "Who Came First" album which, IMO, is excellent.

Those songs might not exactly be Who (the band) songs, but I always thought it was cool that Pete had an outlet to put out his "demos" under his own name, and that he did so.

Just saying that there are a lot of "Pete songs" that he does really well on his own - and some are best suited to be *his* songs, and others best suited to be *Who* songs. It always goes that way for any prolific great writer.

To turn this idea around a bit, this kind of thing might've produced four separate albums had the individual Beatles done "solo demo" albums instead of putting out the "White Album" under the Beatles name...

The Who is a classic band with a classic sound that over the course of time has become recognized as a unique contribution of the British Invasion. What were once less popular tunes have found their way, as Jerry points out, "in constant rotation on FM."

Steve: Agreed, the White Album was in many respects a collection of individual efforts.

I bought a Who collection last Sunday at my favorite CD outlet, Costco. Many I had never heard before (The Kids are...Pictures...Legal Matter...) been listening all week. I think "Lily" and "Legal Matter" and one or two more wouldn't have been player in the US just based on the subject matter. Perhaps that's why not a lot of early hits here. It also took some time for bands and US radio to catch up with their sound, they were quite hard for the day.
BTW, The Kids Are Alright - the first power pop song? Seems like the template which exists to this day.

Roy: This track is incredible. Thanks for sharing it. The middle eight almost sounds a bit like the Beach Boys. Also, I love this rough version and find some of the harmonies at this early stage better than the final release. A great bit of history, this. There should be an unplugged version of this one, if there isn't already.

Thanks, Roy, that's great. I assume Entwhistle took lowest harmony and Pete the highest. Entwhistle, on this rehearsal, seems to be playing in an early McCartney style!
