Hmm... Not a 4003? How about 4003S?
I've seen that Rick on Ebay before. I remember that some of us have commented on it. I also remember commenting on that horrible finger rest. Can't remember the title of the topic, though.

Jamie "Rickenbacker" Gada and his 74 year old company can't tell the difference between a 4003 and a 4003S?

Yeah, I remember that 4005. The poor thing got into a no win situation, as they say. I guess that only Mark can salvage this one.

Some further stellar modifications...

The latter is as crass as it gets - the strings don't even line up with the pickup polepieces. Gross!

It makes me cry (okay, not really, but) to see what people do to all these instruments, and I don't understand people who seek out old instruments only to modify them. I wish they would just leave the 4000s with one pickup, not put new humbuckers in the 4002s, or other heinous acts. Just leave these for those who appreciate the original instruments and go find a nice copy guitar to play around with.

I see your point on that one Jeff but on the other hand it depends on what condition you find your Ricky's in. Several months ago I found a 3001 with a broken pickup and a way-funky mirrored pick guard cut in the wrong shape. The frets were also worn, the finish was well worn and the fingerboard was lifting. I re-glued the fingerboard, sanded it down, refinished it in clear, had it refretted, rewired with new electronics, modified the bridge, and added a new pickguard, clear thumbrest,4001V63 bridge pickup and vintage style knobs and white Delrin Ricky nut.The thing sounds killer with round wound Rick strings. My 3000 was even worse with a Dimarzio pickup too! I restored it in a similar way and refinished the body in pearl white and added a 4004 pickup,Pyramid Gold flats and had the bridge re-chromed. I sought out these basses because they were f'ed up and new I could only improve them while customizing them into instruments Ric never made using all Ric parts.

What you are describing I don't have an issue with, it's when someone goes out and buys a perfectly good instrument in original condition, and then "upgrades" it, often irreversably (hey, I've done it myself only to regret it later). While I'd prefer to see some of these restored to stock, that's often not possible, but taking a working instrument and modifying it, especially an already rare model, is a crime.

Garry: no doubt that 4001 has been sanded bare. As to the loose bass parts, I wonder what has become of the 4001 they came from...
Jeff: my sentiments exactly. All such modifications should only be done to the goddamned Electra, Ibanez, Cimar, Nagoya, Univox, Greco, Gherson, Sigma and Aria 4001 copies still out there! I detest them like a disease!

Ira, about that Red 4003 listed on ebay, and to the folks commenting upon Jamie ..

I too, looked into that, and emailed the person.

Lo and behold, it was Caruso's Music, in New London CT.

This is where I bought my Marshall Plexi 50w
25 years ago when I was a young submarine sailor in the US Navy!!!

Anyhow, I wasn't in the market for a red 4003, I wanted a jetglo, and after a brief delay on hold, Jamie told me he had a 1999 4003 used for $800.00

I got that instrument a week and a half ago. And let me tell you, it is in TOTALLY mint condition !!! Absolutly NO scratches, no dings, nada... It appears to have been in the case the entire time.

It's hurting me to play it because I don't want to bust it's hymen !

I made a point of requiring a total setup of the instrument, knowing how the truss rods are on a Ric, and let me tell you, this thing plays SO sweet !!!

I've gotta say, Jamie DOES know his stuff when it comes to Rics, and Caruso's is a world class music store..

So guys, in the future, if you have any dealings with Jamie, or Caruso's, I'll tell you, they are one of the best..

That 1978 4001 on ebay has a toaster as neck pickup.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't a stock '78 4001 sport a hi-gain instead?

By the way, not to sound chauvinist, but the beauty of a 4001 is ruined once the bridge pickup's chrome ring is gone.
