I changed the strings to Pyramids several weeks ago and was very dissapointed with the sound of the E-string. No sustain, just kind of a 'dead' sound. Now several weeks later, it has come alive. It's everything that I had hoped to hear when I first put the strings on. That's what I meant by coming "alive". As far as the saddle, it is being changed out today. At this point, I can't imagine a great tonal improvement but it will center the strings on the fretboard and improve the playability of the bass.

Just wanted to weigh in with my $0.02 and a huge endorsement of Pyramid Gold flatwound bass strings. I've currently got a set on my 4003 and it's not likely that I'll use any other kind but these on this particular bass. Yes, they really do sound that good to me. I've gotten high praise from 2 people who previously had absolutely no use for the tone from Ric basses. They were clearly surprised when I told them the "secret" to the tone I was getting from my Ric. It forced them to re-think their attitude towards Ric basses.

You may also want to try using some Naptha or Ronsonal lighter fluid to clean the strings with before you put them on. I find lots of times that the girls at the factory don't clean them well enough after the final hand grind and polish. they will usually come to life much quicker doing this.
