I use the Dunlop strap locks. On my Ricks I had inlaid them, so they aren't sticking out like a regular strap button. You just see the whole for the straplock.

I also did this on my 5 string basses.

I wouldn't do that to the Ricks again... not for any other reason, but I'm trying to restore them.

Otherwise you do need to dowel the hole, since it's too large for the screw.

I really dislike the Schaller straplocks. The nut on the strap part always comes loose on me.

I have a combination of Schallers and Jim Dunlop on my guitars. For me the Jim Dunlop is more robust and you are less likely to scratch the paint or put a ding in the body in if being a bit over eager during a gig. Schallers are ok though, they tend to be a little cheaper than the Dunlops.
