Pics of the Jazzmaster, please!

I recall the old Antiguas as being browner in color, too. I thought it was just the sepia glow of nostalgia...

I've definitley seen varying Antiguas. That one is not one of the prettiest i've seen.

OK, we don't know each other at all, except from our posts here, but I will say I love your sense of humor. ;-)

Many times on the Fender Forum (am I allowed to mention that here?) I've said that, when I was a kid, I popped better looking zits than what the antiqua finish looks like. Heck, if we'd had eBay in those days I could've made a fortune selling "Antigua bathroom mirrors." ;-)

Noel - You're not too far off in considering all Coronados as dogs... Well, let's just say I've never played one that didn't bark in some raspy no-tone voice. ;-) When I was in high school ('68-'72) a friend had a Coronado in the Wildwood green finish. Remember that "wildwood" stuff? I don't know if that was more or less hideous than antigua...

Sure, these days all that stuff is collector's fodder, and if anyone's into that kind of thing, then I say "more power to 'em." I'll also say "better them than me" too. ;-)

Oh, getting back to the Jaguar/Jazzmaster thing... One of the absolute best (in all respects) guitars I've ever owned was a '63 Jazzmaster.

Real long story about how I got it and what I had to do to restore it, but that thing had such a unique tone... If I had to pick one guitar that I could have back now, that one would be it. No question about it.

My fave was my old faded Fiesta Red ("Coral Pink") '66 CC Jazzmaster.

Oh, man, ain't that sweet. My own '66 Custom Color (now in Switzerland!) faded Fiesta Red, had a tortoise shell pickguard and black pickups.

I bought my CAR Jaguar to refinish in Lake Placid Blue, but it's so amazing in CAR, it's staying red!

Paul, You misconstrued me (and we all know how painful that is)... I shouldn't have said "love and hate" because there's no REAL hate involved here. It's more like I love seeing you bring up topics that are in my personal "love to hate 'em" category - like the Fender Antigua finish. And how awful Coronados were, and that equally horrible Wildwood finish era too. I'll try to be more succinct in conveying written humor from now on, OK?

That said, I really love the old Jazzmasters like my long gone '63. Been tempted to get a CIJ or AMRI but the ones I've seen just aren't the same in terms of smooth playability and tone. I was a real dumbass to sell it, but that day I needed to have my water (or electricity) turned back on...

My one and only Fender is a AMRI Jazzmaster (Black with tortoise shell pickguard) that I bought last year. I like that 7-1/2" radius neck... and only a Jazz sounds right for playing "Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo" and other Morricone masterpieces. ;-)

Just ribbing you, Steve. No offense taken, and I got your meaning first time around.

Coronados and Wildwoods. I remember the hype. I don't know who at Fender was responsible for the brief love affair with dye-injected wood, but they sure bit the burrito on that one.

Reading Forrest White's memoirs (with a large cube of salt, everybody...), he seems to think that their acoustics back then (the ones with the steel tube visible through the soundhole) were the cat's pajamas. Another example, I believe, of an engineer type falling in love with an intellectual concept without dur regard to aesthetic consequences.

Paul, My "apology" was sincere, but sort of tongue in cheek too, so it's good to know we can have fun with each other here. ;-)

But I really do have a "what were they thinking?" kind of thing going on about the Antigua and Wildwood stuff. Especially when the Antigua finish got resurrected as a "Reissue" thing. as if it wasn't DOA the first time around... LOL

But my friend who had the green Wildwood Coronado... he thought it was the coolest thing on the face of this Earth. The guy couldn't play worth, uh, 'shoot' but he had that guitar and some kind of Gibson amp and that gear was *the coolest* (read most expensive) stuff in our band at the time. He was just home from Viet Nam and had money (the rest of us were still in high school) and he was also old enough to buy beer and wine, so... Typical story. ;-)

Really though, he was a great singer and harp player, and a really nice guy. He's the guy who I sold my old f-hole Ric 320 to, which subsequently got stolen from his apartment. Over the years he had a lot of complications became more "lost" to put it lightly. Ended up being one of those guys who dies alone and unnoticed until his neighbors called the cops because of the smell after a couple weeks. Of course I'm leaving out a lot of the "middle" details here, but that whole thing is another regret I'll always have.

Oh, but anyway, we all had some great fun joking about that Wildwood Coronado. Whatever happened to that stuff, somebody probably made a mint off it somewhere along the line.

I still wonder whatever happened to that Gibson amp too. It was our "big amp" at the time because it was a head and cab set up. The other real guitarist and I had Univox combo amps. He played a Kent guitar, and I was called "the rich kid" because I had a used '65 Fender Mustang...

Man, I miss those days/nights of not caring about gear and just getting LOUD...

Hey Paul, when I went to pick up the Jazzmaster, the guy also had a CAR Jag in the room. I was tempted to ask about a transaction change to be honest! Those chrome bits looked really cool.

I've noticed that my Jazzmaster works pretty well for early Stones stuff. What was Keef playing 64-66?
