Perhaps they drank too much of their own product and lost interest!!

Back to snopes.com - before St. Andrews - golf courses had anywhere from 5 to 24 holes. St. Andrews had 18 and it was at St. Andrews that the "official" rules were created. So....I'm with Howard. After 18 holes they had to go back to the clubhouse for more Scotch and lost interest in playing any more holes

Wasn't that the (w)hole thing...the guy who invented it walked nine holes, taking a shot of whisky after each one, then walked nine back doing the same thing...Urban legend I guess.
