Well it wasn't Mexican it was a 1980 candy apple red ,gold hardware pbass special with active electronics.

Got it, the early version of it. Mine's the mid '90s passive version, before they went to Mexico to make them.

I find mine to be versatile also, and it is lighter than the V63, probably comparable to my '73 4001

That's one of the reasons why I like the Ci and the LK.....very comfortable for the long gigs. I was surprised by how heavy Jeff Scott's Cii was when I checked it out in Columbus compared to my LK. I, for whatever reason, just thought the walnut would be heavier.

The tone of the 4004's is what really got me hooked though. Love it!!!!!!!!

It is one of the lightest Ricks in my collection. I guess it is all relative.

the lightest rics I have ever owned were my 68 4001 and my 4004ci ... the 4004cii is not quite that light ...

Wood varies, but in general, Walnut is lighter than Maple.

Well, I received my Rathenbacker and played it tonight for the first time. Very different sound than my factory Cii/5's. More growl and I have to work a bit more on how to blend the two pickups to optimize the sound. Seems my factory Cii/5's have a deeper tone.

The neck is definitely thinner but the spacing is very easy to manage. Much more than my 4003/5 was. Very playable.

As you all would expect, Jeff did a great job on the bass and it is a beauty to see first hand.

Glad to make you happy ... I like that bass a lot ... I would really like to gig with it if I owned it ... the hb1 pickups have a different sound than the hb2 pickups in your 4004cii5 ... also the volume, volume, tone setup makes for more growl ... I find the slim neck and the 2 3/8" bridge spacing very playable for fingers, picks, thumbs, slaps, etc ... that 4004cii was brighter than my 4004L and my 4004ci probably because of the pickups both being about an inch closer to the bridge and the body woods ... your 4003s5 can be almost as playable with replacement saddles that widen the strings at the bridge to 2 1/4" ...
