These 4000's all seem to have great thin necks on 'em & play wonderfully. And that JG is awesome. Mine's got a few small dings, but it's a player before all else. I'll never sell it. It plays too well.

Hm... I keep wondering why on every 4000 I've seen the neck enters the body at a slightly different angle (as viewed from the front or from the back of the instrument) than on a 4001. The bridge location, somewhat off to the side (again as viewed from the front), is proof of this. Odd, if you ask me.

Yes there is a slight difference. I measured mine & the difference seems mainly to be a little extra breadth in the body to accommodate the binding. The pickgaurd of my '76 4000 is further from the body edge & tight against the treble pup surround, where my '77 4001 has a 3/16" separation from the pup surround. The angle does seem a little different as well, now that you mention it.

The 60's neck thru ones are cool. I'd like one of them. A really cool MG one sold last year for around $1800 that had been with the original owner.
It had yellowed to a really gorgeous amber. One of the best looking basses I have seen.

Sergio,i know exactly what you mean,the only reason that would make any sense would be balance I don't think acoustics would have anything to do with it.

I've got a 73 4000 jetglo and if I ever manage to post a decent picture, you may even get to see it ....although it has been seen a couple of times before on the Forum. Better pics required though...I'll work on it. Got to say I'm finding time and time again that bass cuts through live like none of my other Ricks, and it's SO Jean-Jacques Burnel sounding. I think I'm glad I didn't get rid after all; sorry Jaymi and Jim! Maybe one day...you'll still have 1st dibs.
Regarding shape, FWIW I tried my 4000 in my mate's 4003 case awhile back, and it was a terrible fit.

The balance is also quite different, but I always thought it more a matter of different wood & less hardware on a 4000. Mine's way more top heavy (headstock) than my 4001. You really have to support the neck of a 4000 while playing, while the 4001 sits pretty much at equilibrium.
