I have a lot on my plate ... I work full time, I play in a working band, there are several confluences per year ... I also have friends and relatives to visit ...and I have people inviting me as a public speaker in South America, Illinois, Colorado, Indiana ... and sometimes I lie to just have time off and do nothing ... and I host multiple web sites and I write software and sometimes I watch the red wings ... life is busy ... someday I will get out there ... and I will bring a 4-2-5 bass ...

damn typos ... I meant to say ... sometimes I just like to have time off and do nothing ...

Jeff, you should come and be a public speaker in SoCal.

The public speaking is done for free and it is actually Christian teaching ... but here I talk about Rics and rock n roll ... but I will get out to California again someday ... I used to live in the bay for about 12 years ...

the first confluence was actually at my house it was Paul Boyer, Steve Cooper and I ... so if anybody is traveling to southeast Michigan they are welcome to come visit me ... we can have a beer and bang on a ric bass ...

There's a bit of the conversation missing here re: distortion: i've found it really helps to have some speakers that are more closely matched to the wattage output of your amp.. Lemmy, Wetton, Squire, and many more (JJ Brunel from the Stranglers, Peter Hook, etc), have used HiWatt or Marshall cabs loaded with Celestions, Goodmans, Fanes, etc., which are fairly low wattage have a pretty early breaking point.. it's an amazingly 'grainy' sound.. i used to use a 4x12 guit-cab all the time, with my KT88-loaded Traynor and it sounded great. I know folks often worry about blowing these types of speakers, but it's harder than you'd think. ..and 12's by nature are a bit more midrangey to my ears, but also handle the lows quite well.. if i missed an earlier mention of this, i apologize.

I start off the Gig with a nice comfortable volume with both pickups on, the switch in the middle position, by the 2nd set I'm picking behind the treble P/U with occasional flicks of the switch to the Treb P/U only. By the end of the Job I'm picking closer and closer to the bridge and sometimes only using the treble pickup. An old SuperBass 100 and a 4X12 bottom always sounded best at the end of the night. Part of the good tone is being in the "Zone".

I like to pick back by the bridge and roll off a little volume from the neck pickup ... sort of a Chris Squire thing ... then for finger style I play up by the neck pickup and strike hard ... sort of a Geddy style of playing ... then I will pick and palm mute to get a McCartney type sound ...
