Don't forget - music can groove without being funk! Some of that Deep Purple stuff grooves hard while still being heavy. Check out Burn too while you're at it - (I posted about it once before in the pick players thread) Glenn Hughes is another great bass player, he plays a 4001 on that album. He is definitely more of a straight-ahead funk player, and you can hear that on later Deep Purple albums like Stormbringer and Come Taste the Band, but on Burn he downplays the funk, even though the music still grooves!

I would be willing to bet that Pantera were influenced by Deep Purple too - Dimebag seemed to be into a lot of the classic metal stuff...

Les Claypool auditioned for Metallica after Cliff died.. he wasn't allowed in cuz he was too funky.. LOL.

Early Rush could be considered Metal. Like "Fly By Night". That's kinda like old metal.

I agree. Go with Motorhead. I'm not to familiar with Deep Purple.

I'm just listening to a Starcastle album (the first one? - it's eponymously titled) that I downloaded from iTunes. It sounds great! Very much Yes redux but again, it sounds great! The bassist (who passed away recently, can't recall his name right now) used a Ric, and you can tell! Especially liking the last tune, "Nova" - anyone else into these guys?

Don't forget the guy from Manowar played a Ric, how much more metal can you get?
Don't forget, it's YOUR sound, it will work with any genre, so much of it is the player, not the bass.

I'm in a band that plays loads of Metallica plus Motorhead, Pantera, White Zombie., etc. and my Rics have a great tone to fill out the mix. I recorded some stuff a few days ago but getting the clips posted has been more of a hassle than I anticipated.

Brian, what exactly is the problem? Converting to a format that you can post, or finding a place to post? Despite its problems, myspace.com is a pretty convenient place to post - just make sure you set up a music account, not a regular one!

I've been saying this for years! I have a funny story to back it up too!

I remember back in the 70's I was in this cover band (Dreamer for any people from NJ old enough to remember the club scene... ) and we were rehearsing one night at an unused convent house (was part of a church) in a somewhat bad part of town (East Orange NJ).

So here we are playing Space Trucking, when I look out the window (we were on the second floor) and there, on the corner, were two hookers dancing to the music! Doing the bump too!

It was quite a sight!

Harry, I saw Starcastle open for Gentle Giant in Central Park, NYC. Was a great show! They were sooo Yes though!

It's nice to see there are Purple fans here, and Mark III fans to boot. The new Purple groves as well.
Nate, check out some Deep Purple CD's. They are a great band, all talented musicians.

Hmm, Starcastle....pretty pale cheezy imitation of Yes, if they can be compared at all...and those hairstyles: yikes! Presumably, Gentle Giant mopped the lawn with them...

Excellent East Orange story though, David...totally believable, and Cream of New Jersey! It points out one of the differences between then and now, though. The way a lot of women are dressing nowadays, I don't know how the hookers are supposed to stand out in a crowd anymore...

Sooo...you're from Jersey and used to work for ITT...where, exactly? I worked for their affiliate, FEC (Federal Electric Corp.), just a hand-grenade's throw from the Paramus Mall...

Yeah, GG mopped the lawn with them! It was the Interview tour.. damn that was a great show! I had never heard of Starcastle before the show. First time I saw GG was opening up for Mahavisnu Orchestra on the Birds of Fire tour! I had never heard of GG before then... but they became one of my all time favorite bands. Real fun stuff to practice too! I was just playing along with some the other night.

I worked for ITT DCD in Nutley... the River Road building... right down the street from the Clifton plant, which is the only building left. They sold most of their land it seems..to the Clifton Commons mall. Hey, I remember FEC!
