I had a bad *** leo quan bridge on a 74 4001 ... it took away from the looks and it took away from the sound ... but it was easier to adjust ... for me these two basses are close enough to a Geddy bass ...

The '77 I got from Lindsay came pretty much as a Geddy... sanded fretboard, Schaller instead of a Badass, and I think his had a brass nut done too. I might be wrong... but if mine is close, trust me you'll like it... but that bridge is a PAIN!!!!

Steve, Harry.. you two are the best!

Jeff.. those two are cool.. but they're 5'ers. Ged's 5'er was a Wal.. but those are expensive. I do like the 4003 though.. I miss that look.

Joey, that surround is the kind I want.. but black. I don't know if Ged's surround went all the way around like it did on his 4080's, but if it did, so what?

I think the badass will help intonate it.. mine is never perfect. The strings are always just a little bit off.. if I can eliminate that with a new bridge, what's the big deal? Plus my tailpiece is lifting and taking the finish with it.. I want something that won't lift up. the surround will hopefully go over the chips too.

Just as long as it's not some fly by night idea that he was just in the mood to do. I say... get the counterparts and show, don't tell.

Guys.. I think we need to keep these awful puns Entre Nous...

When I'm done with the project I'll give Before and After pics.. hehehe.

So.. I'll get the parts, take em to a guitar shop or something and hopefully a week later.. Presto my tribute will be finished.

I wonder if I should give pics of the Different Stages of my bass.. I want to see A Show Of Hands from people that want to see that!

Geddy use steel Rotos too right? (I'm not gonna do a "Caress of Steel" pun here! Don't worry!) What kind?

It is my Mission to get this done and In The End I hope this will be a worthwhile project. Image

And just so ya know.. it'll be Heresy if this thread turns into a bunch of Rush puns!

(Yeah, they suck, I know!)

...but would routing the body give the maples their long-sought-after sunlight?

That's it. I haven't the Bravado to come up with another one.

ROFL! Seems like Bob is Losing It with the puns...

I don't know about the maples.. they're trying to get all of the Available Light.

I don't feel bad about giving my bass some Scars...

Hey, you're young, you're wild, and you're free, so you might as well go for it and experience the triumph of having a bass just like Geddy's. I mean, if you're thinkin' it over but you just can't sort it out, do you want someone to tell you what they think it's all about?

Oh, sorry, some Triumph got mixed in there. I get my Canadian three-piece bands confused sometimes...

ROFL!

Actually.. I've been thinking of going all out.. getting it refinned and refreted. My bass's finish is checked and falling off because I'm stupid when it comes to temp changes.. and the frets are pretty worn.

I did all that stuff with my basses. I refreted them with larger frets, put a Bad *** II on the first one and a Schaller on the second.

The sound did change, but they still had a Rick vibe to them.

Now I'm trying to restore one of them back to stock condition. Why now? Probably because it's not my main bass and therefore I can live with the stock parts...

Cool! Badass on it? Or just the classic JG rick?

David, what kind of frets? I want to refret mine. the frets are fairly worn, and I use steel rounds, so I want something a little bigger and something tough enough to take the damage.

Also, my bass has a bit of forward bow.. what should I do about it?

I don't think the Badass II was on at that point, I did latter swap it out , as well as install a brass nut.

I used Gibson jumbo sized frets, like you would find on a Les Paul. Not the real huge ones you find on some basses. I also leveled them somewhat lower than what most people do... makes the action feel faster, just like a stock 4001. But they seem to last longer. I don't use Rotosounds anymore though... I use nickel D'Addario XL's. I got tired of having to grind and polish my frets so often!
