Wow. I never knew he played bass. I don't know much about his history, but I did see him live about 20 years ago at a little Chicago dive called Biddy Mulligan's. It was a great show, but it was just him and an acoustic guitar...so I assumed that was how he always played.

Donovan opened for Yes in the late 70's, IIRC it was the GFTO tour. Springfield Mass August if I recall. General admission and I was right in front getting squeezed by the crowd.

I saw Yes on the GFTO tour also with Donovan opening. I took several pics and caught Squire in mid air, Steve how jumping back on one foot and Wakeman's hair whipping around in one shot. My senior yearbook used it in their "what happened this year section". I still have a set of prints and the negatives someplace.

I also have some pictures of the show in Springfield Mass, '77. They are up in the attic someplace. I recall this spider-web backdrop/art at the rear of the stage and Alan White had these Tom's with a horn type flare to them. Very groovy...

I've seen that drumkit before-I think you could buy it off the shelf. Looks like the periscopes from the Yellow submarine but upside down!

He used them on a recent Yes tour (last year).

I used to HAVE a set of those, I can't remember what the heck they are called, though...I think they were Fibes, I had a white set with those big bell projectors on the bottom.

That's what they were, North!!! Thank you Jeffrey! Image
Yes, I played drums for a few years in various bands, my dad was a drummer in the big band era, played with Glenn Miller and Jimmy Dorsey and one of his proudest moments was when Buddy Rich let him play his drums one night in Milwaukee. Apparently this was a very rare occurrance.
Anyway, here are the North drums. Those are not mine, I found them on the web.

Steve is actually a drummer, guitarist, and a bass player ... and he sings too ... and he is an architect ...
