"My 84 v63 had 3 dots like the one pictured in R Smith's book. I think that the Turquoise bass got the dot by error."
John, if you are refering to the one on page 115, then that is my bass, for the next 24 hrs.
It is not a production V63, it is..... well.. whatever...!

Interesting-
Is the neck on it like a bat?
Mine was odd in that the neck was huge....

John, not a bat but not skinny either. It is certainly not as thick as recent 4003's that I've tried, yet not as thin as some of my earlier 4001's.

It can't be a 4003S...
No 4003S were made with the 60s horns/headstock, 4003S ended in early 1996.
Look, here's another one - and a 4003S next to it for comparison.
1995
4003S on the left, JG
1997 Triple-dot V63 (?) on the right, TQ
You can clearly see the difference between the two, muscular horns of the 4003S, the longer headstock of the Turquoise. It even has the vintage TRC, It has to be a V63 with 3 dots...
It'd be good if John Hall could chime in with verification that no 4003S were made after the 60s-style changeover in the late 90s...

Couldn't you check under the pickguard to see if it has holes for the 4003 screw pattern?

There are 2 ways to tell for sure if it is a 4003s or a 4001v63 ... if it is a v63 it will have a square heel and walnut headwings ... checking the headwings can be problematic ... but the heel is easy to see ...

Take a tuner off and look in the hole to check for walnut wings. Maybe.

Yep ... that would work ...

....but why even do that when you can just look at the heel?
