Dave: Yep. I've still got 'em. They are in nicer shape than those. Nicely yellowed, if you're into that thing. I've already bought new nickel/white button Klusons for the refinish project. Let me know if you want them.

That appears to be an old toaster and consistent with pickups from around '64.

By the time this guitar was made the mold rings had gone away from the toaster slots...I agree with Ted IMHO that the p/up is the original. In fact all that remains on it is original.

Even though it has '1000' in the cavity it could have still been sold as an Electro brand instrument. Dave, it looks like it doesn't need much at all to get it back to spec. Neat find.

Thank you all for your input...

Thanks Randy, since you offered, let me know what you want for the tuners and the knob.

Once the 4080/12 resto is done, I guess this one is next.

Hey John S.

With the off centered single screw hole, for the missing TRC, can we conclude if it was a Ric (or not)???

Did the TRC leave a faint impression in the finish? You may be able to see it viewed at an angle. Many of my Ricks have pickguard and TRC marks.

Ted, No...

You would think that the paint under the TRC would not be as faded. Not the case here.

I hate to be a pain in the a$$.

On page 160 of the Smith book, the Electro's were glue in necks??? Is that true?

It says "most" so there could have been exceptions, I suppose.

Yes, I think the off center screw hole is a clue. The Electros seem to have a more or less centered screw hole.

Dave: One of the truss rod nuts appears to be broken off. Must have been done by the same guy who lost the TRC!

Well, my .02 is that's it's a Rickenbacker, not an Electro....

As far as the 'set neck issue vs. neck-thru, let me say this:

There is evidence it went both ways. I don't think I've ever seen a set-neck 1000 or ES-16, but I've seen the normally neck-thru ES-17s (420) with set necks from the 60s, as well as model 420, 450 and 460 Rickenbackers from the 60s and early 70s with set necks too. There was a MG 1966 460 on ebay about a year ago that had a set neck, really cool.

I've heard that in some cases they just went to the line and just picked a model they needed and put the appropriate TRC on it....at least what you see sometimes gives the appearance of this.

John Williams just picked up a Ryder Contello not long ago, a '63...maybe he'll chime in and tell us if it's a neck-thru guitar...(I think it is..)

I agree with John. The evidence points to it being a Rick.

As I understand it, the Electro ES-16's were sold to music schools. They would buy a package deal that included a number of 3/4-scale student guitars, a full-scale ES-17 for the teacher, and some amplifiers. Every ES-16 that I have ever seen (less than half a dozen) has had a Fireglo finish. My ES-16 had a factory Jetglo finish when I got it. I think it must have been a very rare finish on this model.
