Call me a purist to a fault if you wish, but when I see a Toaster on a Rickenbacker bass, I also expect to see it installed in the "Close" location (.495" form the end of the fretboard) to get "The Look"; that combined with a V63 pickguard. Example
here. Can you guess what the black one originally was?
That does not change the fact that the Toaster has "The Sound" in either location, I must agree.

Thanks for clearing this up for us. I know there's been many conflicting stories about the metal and the nickel-chrome plated handrests.

In the discussion the 5 string treble pickup was mentioned. I once saw a 5 string Blackstar that had a pickup like a Horseshoe re-issue bobin (sort of cardboard looking with the alnico slugs) that had 5 poles. Is this rare?

Eden:
I think you can sort of find the answer to that on 'Rickenbacker Basses 2000-2001 Archives'. Click on 'Horseshoe Pickup Dimensions', near the end of the thread list, and you'll find Mark Arnquist's comments on just such a (genuine) Rick pickup.

The mirror guard, the toaster, wow you guys have me thinking about replacing my neck pickup with a toaster. I never mod any of my basses, but I'm really tempted.
Peter, I have a silver 4003 too, mine is an '86. Do you think the mirror guard would look too funky on a silver bass? It is very striking on against Fireglo but I'm having a hard time visualizing it with silver.

Robert: I am inclined to consider that a mirror guard on the 4003 Silver might be a bit too much. The cloest I can get to giving you an idea of what it may look like it in the following photo. You can see it on
Mike Parks Site.

Yeah, I don't think it does much for the bass at all. This one has white binding and chrome hardware. Interesting, mine is black like yours. On the other hand I think a white guard on a silver bass wouldn't look too great either.
Peter, thanks for posting the picture .
