Thanks Phelps. I ordered the cd. We'll see if it jogs my memory once I hear it. According to Ackerson's webpage he lives in uptown Mpls. Uptown has gotten very trendy over the years, but back when The Dig was around, uptown was the place to be. Very cool music scene for many years in the 80's and early 90's. Husker Du lived on Garfield and 25th, The Replacements had apartments around there. The Suburbs was another band that used to play around town a lot. It was a pretty tight scene. Everyone hung out at the same places primarily the Uptown Bar and Grill. The 'mats had practice space in the old warehouse district downtown and I was bouncing around from band to band in the same warehouse. Used to ride the bus from uptown to downtown with Westerberg daily. Dude used to get drunk in the mornings on his way to practice. Good times.

"Any tips on getting that sound, short of ponying up for an AC-30? Or was it a Marshall? Did Weller use roundwound strings?"
Weller used a Peavey solid state practice amp on "Setting Songs" - I think it was a Backstage 15? As for strings, I remember reading that he used .011s - most likely roundwound Rotosounds.
I think that if you add a compressor set fairly low to your effects chain it will help you achieve the Weller sound at reasonable volume.
