Ted.. What did you use as a template for the new wings? The old maple ones? Did you just eye ball it?

Yes, I traced the old ones on to a piece of walnut. Getting the right length on the bottom edge taper is critical.

Here is the first sanding. There is still a fair amount of shaping to do.

A little more refinement.

The maple over the fingerboard is my guide board for cutting the binding route. It is held in place with ordinary hot glue so I can pop it off later.

The next step is to cut the neck binding route. I have been psyching my self up for that one. The body binding is easy. BTW the finish comes off very easily and the wood looks fab.

As long as that bass is going to be unique, why not checker binding on the neck?

Well, that's a thought, but usually checker is overlayed with solid white (or black), and there's really not enough room for one layer of binding, let alone two. Then I'd have to consider the side position marker dots . . .

Bound head stock????

A bound headstock is possible. I am not sure how to do the tapered route near the nut.



I don't think it is there for looks. That is an inherently weak area of the neck. The less wood removed the better.
