Margaret Thatcher stomped our unions, but that is a different matter.

UK?...NEVER, we're British!!!!
BTW, well done Peter. I have always referred to our flag as the Union flag & sometimes, even the British don't know what I'm on about!

Thanks Tony,
Now I feel better. I rather dislike the term the UK. But that's just one of my quirks I suppose...

When I visited there in 2002 it was to England, Ireland and Wales - never the UK! Sorry, Scotland - you missed out (possibly a good thing for them - LOL!). This time around it's England....
I guess 'UK' is a handy abbreviation when necessary........

See if you can follow this...
Great Britain = England, Scotland and Wales (but not Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Isles).
United Kingdom (Correctly called "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) = England, Scotland, Wales and the province of Northern Ireland (but not the Isle of Man or the Channel Isles).
The British Isles = England, Scotland, Wales and all of Ireland (Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland, which to confuse things further is called "Eire"), the Isle of Man (but not the Channel Isles).
The UK and the Channel Isles are all in the European Union (but the Isle of Man isn't).
There! Clear as mud, isn't it?
And the way things are going here, it will soon be illegal to fly the Union flag or the St. Georges Cross (Flag of England) because it may be "offensive" to immigrants or minority groups!!!

I understand where you're coming from, Peter.
We've had a municipal council in Sydney stop flying the Australian flag on a beach pavillion because 'it may offend' - not 'did' but 'may'.
We also have four and five year old children singing 'Bah Bah White Sheep' in kindergartens because of the perceived inferences in the traditional version.
One can only wonder where it might end.......
Living in a bark shack miles from nowhere in the bush is looking pretty good right now!
Back to the topic... I don't think a green and gold Rick with a flying kangaroo on the treble bout is going to win too many hearts over here.
This might, however.......

Well... replace a kangaroo with a mouse, and it will win at least
one heart!

Oh well, back to the topic, right... personally, i've never heard it being referred to as "Union Jack" before, "Union Flag" only... Interesting observation of the names, Peter, thank you a lot - i was always wondering what's the difference between Great Britain and United Kingdom...
