it took me awhile to learn the solo to la villa but I've got it down pretty good, I just need to work on not making the notes ring out so much and slowing down to the studio recording speed(I play lots of metal...I like to go fast). I remember the first time I heard that song...it was my bass teacher who showed it to me and I was like "damn I will never good enough to play this!" My teacher is the one who turned me on to Rush and I thank him because I'm a total Rush nut now(as are many people here)

I'm getting better all the time! It's becoming second nature now. I've got pretty good chops, so I can make the notes as quick as I need. Thanks to all the bass playing Rush fans for all the support and interest. I'm glad I 'ain't alone!!!
I learned off the Live version from R30, that's the 1978 version, which I think is slightly faster than the studio one. I like to play fast too, it impresses the hell out of a lot of people, especially after a slow passage. Then you hit 'em with some fast flurries... Ooooh yeah!!! LOL!

This thread is utterly useless without MP3s to prove it.

*wink*

I'll record something sometime and put it up. Probably not La Villa . . . but I can get a tone VERY close to Geddy's in "Exit . . . Stage Left", though I usually lean more towards clearer/clankier or growlier/thicker (think "A Farewell To Kings" and "Signals"). My amp is just really nice when you plug it direct.

I'd love to hear that. I get excellent growl when I move between frets. It's a cleaner sound than Geddys but I like it. Clank-a-liscious!

Well here's a video from 19 years ago of La Villa I did w/a couple of guys. This was their college recital for their final grade. 2/3 of the performers were required to be from Columbia College. I was the 1/3 that wasn't. The video was recorded on an old '70s camera that was connected to a ****** VHS recorder. There's plenty of ghosting in the picture. It wasn't hi-fi and there's tons of drop outs. Added to that, the guys were nervous due to the pressure to do well. I was quite relaxed since I had nothing to lose. The drummer rushes quite a bit which makes everyone look off and he loses the rhythm for a sec at one spot.
Any way I took quite a few liberties with the bass line and added quite a bit. Don't know if you can hear it though due to the ****** sound. I played this on my fretless '81 4001S/FL. You'll hear me slide a harmonic at one of the breaks.
It ain't pretty but enjoy:

Cool! Just wish the sound was more balanced.
Looked like it was fun.
