If I found myself on a subway platform in Manhattan in the '80s (as I frequently did), and I were suddenly to get "Everybody Wang Chung tonight..." stuck in my head, I believe I coulda run with it.

So that was YOU I saw in the subway singing Wang Chung, when I worked in Manhattan! Image

"So they did reduce the vibration then? I wish I'd known about this difference, I might have held off for a later one."

Jon, I cannot really tell a difference in sound or the vibration to be honest. However, I do not play the 4080's for 4 hours a night, like the other ric's. Perhaps if I played them more I would.

"Slightly OT - I take it you have my serial no. in your database Dave?"

Of course Image
I am also trying to include a picture with each entry.

Jon, you can see here the side by side neck depth differences. About 2" + -

Very clear in that picture Dave, thanks.

"However, I do not play the 4080's for 4 hours a night, like the other ric's."

Me neither! About 12 minutes at a time is the longest it's on at the moment. If you can't see a difference between the two in behaviour, I guess I'll rest easy about it.

Well, all right! Here's my 1979 4080. Original pickguards and TRCs were black. A terrific player and looker. It steals the show wherever I take it, invariably drowning out any F*****s and G*****s in attendance haha.

That'd be Azureglo. Check out Dave's above to see how it originally looked, with black guards and TRC.

Joey...it coulda been me, I s'pose...as long as you didn't hear any Marillion, that is...

Dave...yes, I've seen this phantom 10/75 4080/12 mentioned here and there, but I was never able to verify it's existence. I wrote to RIC and received a reply from John Hall...a very nice message from a very decent guy, but unfortunately, nobody in the company knows what year they built the first one of these.

Ah well, it's all water over the bridge to me now...(or is it 'under the dam'?)

Sergio, that azureglo is perfect with the white pickguard and TRC... wow, what a guitar!

I have a side project with friends where I am switching back and forth between guitar and bass. A guitar like yours would be really cool for that. And... for playing Xanadu... wow, nice guitar!

Well, when I first saw it at a friend's local music store in October 1982 I thought to myself, 'I gotta have this beauty'. There were some Jetglo 4001 basses there too, but I couldn't care less. So, the 4080 it was.

Thanks Dave...you are rapidly becoming the most knowledgeable expert on these babies. Time to publish a book, maybe?

Wonder who they built that first one for?

I just really love the 4080's.

Are all the guitar fingerboards on the 4080's flat? The lack of radius was the most awkward thing for me. I still don't feel as comfortable playing things I play easily on radiused fingerboards.
I just play different stuff.
The bass neck seems to have an even tighter radius than a 4001.
