I always thought a shillelagh stick came from the old Irish martial arts of stick or staff fighting.

But a lot of people seem to call a Hurling stick by that name as well.

Always best to have a few in the house though for protection against intruders, as long as you have a few spare balls beside them the law is on your side!

Is that where the phrase "I'll give you a good shillacking (sp?) comes from?

I thought is was spelled "shellacking", after the wood finish, not the Killarney Klub.

I'm sure you are correct, sir!

Perhaps the song "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" was about the shillelagh stick, then.
