Tube Ampegs kill the SS's in sound and thickness, especially the old SVT's they sound so big and thick you can walk on the sound.

I've got both an Ampeg SVT-3 Pro and an SVT-2 Pro and though the 3 Pro has 150 more watts than the all-tube 2 Pro, the 2 Pro has a solidity, punch factor, and tightness to the tone that the 3 Pro hints at but just can't quite attain. Using the same SVT 410HLF cab (4 ohm) and bass. I prefer the tubes.

Is that the same amp they called the SVT-II John?

The SVT-II is a rack mount version of the early SVT but it does have a 6-band graphic eq too. The SVT-2 Pro has a slightly different preamp section plus a 9-band eq (almost the 3 Pro preamp section).

The early SLM head that is, I have a skunkworks head, # 413 I think, I converted it to 12DW7's, it's a good sounding head but breaks up more easily than the Magnavox heads. It's sound is a little cleaner at moderate volumes though.
