I hate to spoil your party guys but have any of you ever listened to any jazz/fusion players?

More complex doesn't necessarily mean better. Just because it's "jazz" doesn't make it better. I think that, viewed in the history of the development of the instrument, Bobcat's statement holds up.

Nate, a YouTube search for The Who or Entwistle will turn up lots of great stuff. Beats just listening to a CD.

If I do an Entwistle search on youtube I get the 5:15 solo and the link posted here. I like to listen to the CD though.. gives me time to memorize the song and then figure it out.

If you use Firefox, there's a plugin that allows you to save YouTube videos to your hard drive.

I like YouTube mostly because it lets you see and hear the live versions of these songs. I also prefer watching videos to listening to CD's. Either way, have fun!

Apples and oranges essentially when comparing Entwistle to Jaco/Stanley etc....

All do what they do in their respected fields magnificently. Macca is no technical wiz, but his lines are wonderful too.

One should always admire though, the hours of practice an individual has put in to be a great technical player.

Jack, which is the plug in you use? There's some stuff on Youtube I'd really like to save (and I have Firefox). I'm a non-tech-head so please keep it simple! Oh, it's for Mac too...

Yes; I grew up largely on jazz (I would say 2/3 of my Dad's CDs are jazz or some permutation thereof). And yes, it's amazing and I love it. But that doesn't erase Entwistle's brilliance on bass.

For best results, let the video on YouTube completely play before you save it to your hard drive. This way it's already in your cache, and saves quickly. The instructions will tell you how to save files and play them afterwards. The playback is not as large or clear as it is on YouTube's window, but it's watchable. Try a few saves and see how you like it. There may be other programs available to save those videos that are better, but I haven't looked into it.
