Okay, Bryan, I've just reviewed the 6 posts you've placed on this forum. I have to say I am a little suspicious. 5 of your 6 posts have offered little actual content except what appears to be a link to information on gambling. I might have let it go since Peter will catch it anyway, but you're on my turf now. At least, my section of Peter's turf! We talk musicianship here, not casinos. Unless it's an Epiphone Casino!

So forgive me if my assessment is flawed, in which case I offer my apologies, but I'll bet dollars to donuts this is some kind of "intelligent spamming," and you will notice we don't dig that type of thing, man. Not our bag.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program...

In one of my web searches (I can't remember the details now), I came across a page that had a link to what was supposed to be a relevant page; when I clicked on it, the page displayed was some spam/sales pitch, obviously unrelated to the original content. I went back to the first page and e-mailed that author, who was grateful that I had pointed that change out to him.

Good point, Gary. I considered it may have been an error, but after studying the placement, timing, and content of his posts, it was pretty clear this person had no real interest in the forum. I am still open to the possibility I was incorrect, but... I don't think so. Anyone who saw the now-deleted posts would probably agree. But you're right, it's best to proceed with caution... or at least an exit strategy!

Good point Gary, the situation that Jason noted here would seem to be of the type you have described. Unsupervised forums are a perfect target for this sort of thing.

Boy, I know that for a fact! There is a forum called Raging Bull, and I often check the postings about my former company (I still have some stock in my 401K from them). For a while, the spammers were posting gazillions of spam messages every day, making it difficult to read the real postings. I did complain, and maybe that helped, because RB has since cleaned up the board and now the postings are again relevant.

Well, at livejournal communities it may get even worse... it takes only a couple of minutes to register a new livejournal account and about the same time to become a member of a community. On New Year's (Dec 2006 & first days of Jan 2007), when moderators were on vacation or something, many Russian-speaking popular handmade communities (knick-knacks, handmade toys, knitting, etc were flooded with huge photos of a certain kind...
