Philip, I was also wondering if you've ever removed the bridge pickup from it's mounting bar or if you've ever unsoldered the wires under the bridge pickup.

I've only ever removed the cover, nothing more. I'm not very technical, so I wouldn't even dare that Image
I've made a bunch of pictures of the wires. The pictures are really big, but that's the only way you maybe could see something wrong in there.
Here are the pictures:

Thanks for looking!

(Still scratching my head) Philip, did you check the treble pickup proper?

The grey coax that comes from the potentiometer - the braid part has broken off from the eyelet that is to the screw on the back of the pickup. You need to get that braid soldered to the eyelet. When you hold the long wire that normally goes to the pickup mount screw to the bridge (grounded with a wire to the potentiometer bodies) or even a string (which is grounded to the bridge) you get audio because the treble pup circuit is then completed. Just solder the braid from the grey coax to the eyelet on the back of the pup.

Thanks John.
I think you're right. It looks like some wire broke off within the green circle.
But I can't find the braid which I need to solder to the eyelet. There is just going one wire in the gray coax as seen in the red circle, but there are two wires coming out of it. One to the pickupselector and one to the potentiometer..

Glad that was it. It was the latest pics you posted that allowed me to see the coax without braid wire (red circle) and having changed out bridge pups a couple times or two, I knew it needed to go to the eyelet where the green circle is. Glad you got it working again!

Next confluence I attend I'll take that adult beverage! :D

Today I've recieved my '78 4001 which I won on Ebay. It came here in parts, so I needed to rewire some wires. Again I don't know how to wire the bass(neck) pickup.. Could someone help here? In the red circles you see a wire which hasn't be wired yet.. Where do I need to wire them down?
Thanks!

Two things that will help you rewire a 4001/4003 ...

1 - have a properly wired 4001/4003 around to use as a template

2 - learn to read the schematics on the Ric web site
