I'm sure we all would help out a member's family in need.

I do. His name is Brian.

The least we could do is provide a current appraisal of the instrument's & gear's resale value if it's not already known.
There should be plenty of knowledge here to cover all makes & models.

And on the broader issue (to change the subject back to something more pleasant to dwell on), perhaps we tend to confuse "collectors" with "speculators".
The monetary value is always a present consideration in collecting, but not the overriding one. Beauty, rarity, & preservation are just as important, sometimes more so.

Yup, it depends on how badly an individual wants something. I have seen outrageous prices paid for some of this vintage firewood so many are raving about. On the flip side, some of the more obscenely priced pieces will sit for a long time and no one will buy them. The vintage market is truly inflated and people don't see "the real value" of an instrument until they try to sell it. "b-b-b-b-but I saw a '58 Les Paul go for $350,000 on ebay last week!" All of a sudden everyone with a '58 Les Paul thinks they're going to get that and more for theirs. PT Barnum said, "a sucker is born every minute." If that really were true, vintage Les paul prices would be even higher.

Just remember that with collectors, an item that is in 'true mint' condition will always bring a (sometimes substantial) premium over a similar item in even slightly less condition.

Nigel: Exactly. Now this is special, too, it's a...look...see ...still got the uh...the ol' tagger on it...see...never even played it...see...
Marty: You just bought it and....
Nigel: Don't touch it! Don't touch it! No one...no one...no! Don't touch it.
Marty: Well uh I wasn't...uh I wasn't gonna touch it...I was just pointing at it...I....
Nigel: Well don't point, even.
Marty: Don't even point?
Nigel: No. It can't be played...never...I mean I....
Marty: Can I look at it?
Nigel: No.
Marty: Don't look at it.

You can go get a bite and come back, and it'll still be going.

"Hear that? The sustain? ahhhhhhhhhhh! Well, you would if it was plugged in."

Ya know, I actually have a few musician friends who have never seen "This is Spinal Tap!"

It's a travesty I tell ya!

"This is Spinal Tap!" is probably the best R&R movie ever made.

Unfortunately, a lot of the humor is lost on non-players. My wife thinks it's amusing, nothing more.
A true classic!
