So why do you pick one Ric over another?

I've always thought Rick's have a certain mystery or gravitas, and all come with a great, although admittedly esoteric style.

My original interest in them was only passing because The Beatles played them (if they're good enough for them, etc....). Then I decided to find out what the fuss was about and set out to acquire a 381/12v69. Naturally, as any of us know, finding the "right" Rick is very like finding the right girl (or boy for some of the fairer forumites) - you sort of check out a few and then blammo! you find one you simply must have. For me that occurred with a 2001 660/12 FG. My first thought was, "Oh. My. I. Am. In. Love." And I was and still am.

After that I got a '77 4001 in Walnut which I've since let go, a 2001 360DG which is incidentally a superb lead guitar, a 4003MB, and a 350v63MB - that latter now being my main rhythm guitar. Bottom line for me is, I gotta have all the Right Ricks for all the right occasions. Next acquisition - a 360CW FG or a new-style late 60's 365.

Then... I'll be done.

err...not.

Rick's are kinda like tattoos, each one is something special and personal, and you can never have too many.

This is a great thread.... And everyone's reasons for choosing one Rickenbacker over another are right!

I play on a worship team, and lately my main players of choice have been my 330/12 and my PW 330 Purpleburst, as they seem to best suit most of the songs we have been doing lately. However, when I am just playing for fun at home I have a huge variety of Rickentones at my disposal from my vast aresenal of Rics! For rock and blues, my 481 and 220 can't be beat, and for the most tonal versatility, from overdriven crunch to sweet jangle, my 615 is tops.... I could go on and on about what makes each of my Rics special, and why I prefer one over the others on a given song! Nobody can own just one--they are amazing and inspiring instruments that are totally addictive.

Thanks a heap, Melissa. You're not helping. I've already entertained thoughts of getting a 360/6 string (in matching color) to go with my as yet to be ordered 360/12 string. I wonder what the Missus is going to say?

The interesting thing is, the two Rics that I am currently favoring on the worship team were the first two Rics I acquired.

But as I implied, they're all good!

I must praise the blend knob. At first I thought what a waste, but now, it has become the handy dandy miracle tool. One reason I play this Rick over my 650C at times (though the 650C is a killer guitar).

On my 1997 RI (toasters) both pups on, using that knob I can go from twangy surf tones to lush jazz tones. Man, that is one nice feature.

I'm eating crow here, cause I used to knock the knob before really having the experience of experimenting with it.

It just amazes me how many people don't understand how to use the fifth knob. It ain't exactly rocket science.

Man, this is why I can't wait to get a Ric. I guess I am something of a gadget freak after all. Messing with that fifth knob just sounds like too much fun.

That fifth knob really does give you a kind of flexibility that no other guitar I know of has. It's really nice to be able to dial in just the right amount of oomph behind the jangle so you can adjust to different songs. You'll always be heard on a Rick, you know?

Don't listen to Melissa, she owns a different Ric for each day of the month. In fact, I never want to go to her house. If I ever do, I will end up with the same disease. Actually, Melissa could write an essay, or a book, or film an entire documentary, on how she decides which Ric to play. Of course, we could all be so lucky. Actually, there is hardly such a thing as too many guitars, and definitely no such thing as too many Rickenbackers. I have four myself, and loving it !!
