"Sorry to feed your GAS – I know the feeling!"
no apologies necessary Harry it's not your fault...it's ric's fault for making the best basses ever!...haha
I'm planning on buying a relatively inexpensive 4 string ric bass and having someone (probably Dale) convert it to an 8 string because I don't really want something as collectable as a 4008 or something...I just want a player. I'm broke right now but I'll probably be able to amass the funds necessary in a year or two. It took 5+ years for me to get my first rick so I'm sure 2 years won't be too bad.
by the way...that 4008 must have some wicked neck dive. How bad is it?

Matthew - good luck on the 8-string - maybe you can find one of those Kramer aluminum neck ones! They seem problematic, but I was still kind of into 'em.
One thing I noticed about this bass is that the body feels pretty light. I use a suede Levy's strap, so I haven't had too much trouble with neck-dive, or at least don't notice it while playing. I bet with a different strap I'd be in trouble!
I edited the track I posted just a little bit - cleaned up the beginning & ending, so figured I'd repost it, hehehe:

I forgot about that one! That tuning machine arrangement makes a lot more sense, though I do think that the 4008 & 4003S/8 headstocks look cool too.
Did the original that yours is modeled after have a model #? I forget. Also, did it belong to Entwistle or Squire first? It's in the picture for that one in the Entwistle book that he mentions the string arrangement being backwards, but I forget which one it was...

Mine was modeled after Squire's but I refined the design somewhat. Squire's bass has the tuner arrangement like mine. Entwhistle's had it reversed. Both were the first two 4008's.

OK, got it! I remember the thread when you got it originally. Very cool! I'm going to have to go find that thread and read it again...

It's a ric or nothing at all for me. I will never play any other bass as long as I live!

The neckdive on my old 4003s8 wasn't terrible; I've played far worse basses. In fact it was only about as bad as a reasonably bad Fender 4 string.
