Well I still remember the first time I ever heard Round About, it was on AM radio even.

I thought the bass in Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman was great too, and it may have been a Ric 4001.

the bass in Jumpin' Jack Flash.
The bass in "Confessin' the Blues" The Stones

The bass in "Itchycoo Park" The Small Faces Ric?

"On a Carousel" The Hollies
"He Ain't Heavy he's my Brother" The Hollies, great sound, he had a great 4000 sound.

The Ric bass in Spinal Taps long lost hit from the 60's (Where are they now file)well?

Surfing Surfari, 409, Beach Boys, minimalist bass, great

"We Gotta Get Out of This Place" The Animals.
"San Franciscan Nights" The Animals

"I'm Not Talking" The Yardbirds
"Ain't Got You" The Yardbirds
"I'm a Man" The Yardbirds

More to come.

This Jam thread is sadly a little too late for "official" answers, as their long standing guitar tech Dave Liddle died peacefully in his sleep on the 21st May this year. He was a very good friend of mine, and would have been able to answer all your Jam questions, as he was responsible for the upkeep of Pauls gear for nearly 20 years, right through from The Jam until the late 1990s, and also Bruces gear while he was in The Jam. It was his own guitar that was used on "Thats Entertainment". Dave Liddle R.I.P

I've always wanted to know about the Paul Siminon deal. I've acutally seen pictures of going way back using a Ric 4001, but they are really rare.

I know in the video of "London Calling" he is using either an Epiphone or Gibson hollow body.
I swear it sounds like a Ric on the album. I know that Paul had a Ric and did use it on ocasion, just like the hollow body, even though most of the time it's the white P-bass.

I like the cool "Pollock-style" paint job he did on his Ric.

Paul Simenon used a Jetglo 4001 he painted oddly on the first album "The Clash" I went to a photography exibition here in london a year or so ago. I was like a photographic history of the clash. Paul had his 4001 in all the early photos.

I rememeber reading somewhere that he gave it away because it "looked interesting but soundd lightweight"

I don't know if it was mentioned anywhere on here, but the August issue of Bass Player has an extensive interview w/the Clash bassist. He mentioned he gave-up using his Ric because it sounded too light. Whats up wit dat?

I thought he had a krappy sound anyway, maybe he just couldn't get a good sound, it takes some people a long time to get their sound down, I know because I was one of them. Even with a P bass his sound had no B@lls.

Favourite "Rif"?

I tend to favor genuine Made in America Rickenbackers, thank you. ;-)

Bass Riff?

(For The Love Of)Money, the early '70's song by the O'Jay's (I think). Starts out and is built upon a nice Rickenbacker riff through a phase shifter. Saw it live on the Midnight Special, and dang if it wasn't a ric. Real nice ric tone.

Martin Turner
Wishbone Ash 1st release.
Rickenbacker 4001 with flatwounds and a pick.
Flatwound pick tone to die for on "Handy".
The whole tune is a bass riff.

Saw them live a couple of times, once from the audience when they opened for The Who in Chicago, the Ric was there as well as the Thunderbird. By the time they got to town at UWSP the Ric was gone and he used the Bird all night. Orange Bass Amps BTW,a slight nod to another thread, (o;}. The Ric still was strung with flats for the Chicago show and the Bird had Rotos. Awesome Live band as was Climax Chicago Blues Band but that was a J-bass and Marshalls.

I opened for them in Connecticut around 1981, I had never heard of them, but other guys in my band had, I don't remember if I even watched them play, I think I did and wasn't impressed, but that was probably me not them.
