Paul, don't feel bad....I posted once asking whether or not someone was replicating the original Fender Telecaster straps, which they haven't made in about 50 years...and the thread was deleted within hours, no explination. All I wanted was some info, LOL.....

I also belong to the both forums. I have met some great folks over there as I have through this one. Besides they never given me a problem showing at one of their jams with one or more of my Rics.

Cool, Richard. My Ricks and Fenders get on very well. No arguments when I switch... one just turns to the other and says "your turn!"

There was a comment on there about being able to see the neck construction on all finishes. I thought that was intentional.

Fender does make good stuff, I think, but I chose Rickenbacker. Maybe I'll get a reissue P-bass if I ever start gigging to vary the sound a bit. I have to make money playing first!

I'm a longtime member of the Fender forum too and have had no problems. Seems to me that virtually all brands of guitars are appreciated and discussed at any given time, and nothing is really verboten unless you get downright nasty. Pretty civil group (just like here) if you ask me.

All the pics on my Webshots site are from some of the FDP jams I've attended over the years. There's more but I just never put them up on there. Anyway, some of us have Rics and those are always a highlight. I mean now it's almost a *requirement* anymore - like "You're bringing your Ric, right?" and yes I'm always glad to do so. Really adds to the coolness and fun of those jams, and the other guys really look forward to playing songs when a Ric is involved.

I haven't posted anything on that thread yet, but I've kept up with it and I'm going to post in a little while. You know, in reading stuff like that, you just wait for someone to say stuff like "Ric necks are too skinny" or "They're great guitars, but you can't play lead on them" etc. etc. Those kinds of comments are inevitable. Heck, there's been similar posts here on the RRF too. Main thing is, some of us know better.

There's been a couple of times that I didn't even take my Strat to a FDP jam.

A great gtr is a great gtr. We all know that Rics are the best in the world, but a Strat, Tele, Les Paul, PRS & various Gretsches are also world class gtrs. The Fender chaps are just wild about their brand & it seems a pretty positive thread to me. A couple of 'silly' comments, but I've read some of those here as well.

The point is, that Rickenbackers are an enigma...rare, beautiful, history to die for & a management with a vision that every other guitar manufacturer can only dream of....as well as having THE sound & a magical 5th knob! IMO, regardless of what you play, a Ric will always be a talking point in nothing but the most positive way.

It would be a pretty boring world if there was just one way to do everything. I happen to prefer the RIC bass (I like others too - Carvin, Tobias, a couple of Fenders and Gibsons as well). The others are good and well made, but RIC is my ax and has been since '74. The others have come and gone but the RIC is still there. And I'm sure others feel the same way about their non-RIC basses. Good natured ribbing is cool and expected (IMHO). I didn't feel anything in the other forum was nasty and actually there were some nice comments. Even with our RICs there is a wide spectrum of tastes and proclivities as this and other forums demonstrate. To have only one sound for all of musicdom would make music seem very gray indeed. Actually I think I would be disappointed if the others didn’t feel as strongly about their instruments as I feel about mine. So as an ‘old person’ (50 in a couple of months) I think I’m gonna have to buy me another RIC someday….

RC - I know what you mean. At a lot of the jams I've attended, sometimes I'll end up playing my Gibson faded LP Special most of the time. You know how it is - whatever guitar tone that fits best with whatever song at the time. I've brought various Strats or the Tele and sometimes never even got them out to play at all. Always nice to have them on hand to play though.

As for Rics, I've only got my one 360/12V64. Another guy has a FG 330/12 and someone else has a MG 660 (I think, or a 620) six string. One of my favorite comments from another FDP member and monster player who I really respect (Mike Layden/Pinetree) was when he said something like "You guys had 30 strings of TONE happening up there!" This was after a Beatles/Byrds/Petty set that we did. I just had to thank him and laugh.

So yeah, in my experience, Rics are always more than welcomed at any jams I've ever attended.

And RC, here's hoping that some day you can attend one of our Ohio jams - Cincy, Cleveland, Columbus, or wherever (one's in the planning stages around Springfield now too). As always, anyone is always welcomed to attend any of these jams.
