I have 3 - 2 basses and a guitar.

'77 white with white trim 4001, a heavily customized/refinned '85 4003 that I occasionally refer to as the '85-'05 4003 PWAZ BronzeGlo™ Abomination© and a '93 (I think) FG 330.

I like playing the Abomination on stage because it's unusual/cool but the neck is a bit chunky compared to my '77 and my Jazz. It has a deep powerful roar to it that the '77 lacks. I don't play the '77 much at all anymore because I don't like the capped tone as much as I like the 4003's uncapped thunder.

Oh, that is what you mean by Abomination. You mentioned it once before and I did not understand what you were talking about. It is a distinctive color.

Ummmm, Alan? It really wouldn't be very hard to get that "deep, powerful roar" that you like so much out of your '77 4001.

And I know that you know how to do it by now!

I keep the cap in on one of my 4001s. Its the one that I NEVER play!

Oh, and getting back to the thread:

I'm lucky enough to have more Rick basses than I want to discuss here(from 1973 to 2006 models). So I'll just tell you about my favorite:

The humble 4003S from the late 80's. Relatively inexpensive, under-appreciated, solid, reliable lovable, comfortable workhorses that they are! The truss rods work, the neck feels like a 70's 4001, the tuners are the new Schallers that work well and won't get all tarnished, the seven-screw tailpiece won't lift (and could be partially responsible for the killer tone that they get), no horseshoe to get in your way, no capacitor to bypass, neck-through construction....In a nutshell, they're all you need in a Rick bass and they won't break your bank account!

But there aren't many around, so you might have to wait to find one.
Play what you love, love what you play!

I believe he already had one in that colour ;-). Actually, I think he may have helped another forum member get a 4080 as well.

One last thing:

i (the missing one from my first post in this thread)
Rickenbackers: 4003 FG, 4080 BG, 4001CS, 4003 DCM, 4080/12 MG, 4003s5 JG, 4004Cii MG.
Others by: Wal, Fender, Warwick & Washburn
Amps by : TC Electronics & Ashdown.

I have a wack of other basses but only own one Rick . An 80 fireglo 4001 that is in gorgeous condition. I put on TI flats and did the cap bypass and I have to say that I love the tone. The thin neck is a wonder and it plays like a dream.

It is a gorgeous bass .

Jeff, odd as it may seem given the Abomination's existence, I'd prefer the '77 SnotGlo 4001 remain unmodified.

And anyway I don't like the idea of taking the SnotGlo out to gigs; she's my preciousssssssssssss.

'73 4001 JG
'75 4001FL Burgundy
'79 4001 FG
'81 4001S that a former owner repainted in a rough semi flat black, but it looks cool.
'97 4003S/5 MID
'04 4004Cii JG
'04 4004Cii/5 MG
'04 4004Cii/5 Trans Red
'06 4003FL Monty Brown
75th Anniv 4003 DCM on order.

Now I could use an 8 string Rick.

I with you Joey, an 8 string is what I'm thinking of. Priority kids in college first... but either a natural 8 or maybe a conversion - ahhhh the stuff dreams are made from. That would pretty much round it out.

Speaking of 8-strings...

I've got a '76 Autumnglo 4001, and a '93 4003S/8 JGBT, plus a 4008 FG on the way! Pictures to come when the 4008 arrives - my first Fireglo!

Mine:
1976 4000 FG: the first good bass I've owned, bought in 1986 from music store selling for original owner. Very light & sounds dangerous!
Plays beautifully.

1977 4001 (used to be) White: Got a good deal on this one...neck pup was dead, bridge pup gone, big scratch between treble pup surround & bridge, needed total rewiring. Sergio rewound the neck pup, bridge pup from ebay, new pots from RIC (330k). Sounds great now.

1981 4080 JG: Bought last year on ebay thanks to the gracious help from many forum members. Bypassed cap & it sounds absolutely incredible!
Plays like a dream.
"Worth every damn penny!"

RIC rounds on all three basses & RIC compressed wound 10's on the guitar.

As long as other posted their Rick 6 strings...here's the whole Rick family:

Image

The rogue 6 string is a 2001 650 Dakota. Like someone else mentioned, I feel a little guilty not playing it much (at all), but fortunately my wife refuses to "let" me seel it!

Does the Jetglo c64s have the satin finish, or is it just the mapleglo ones?
