I've always really enjoyed tribute bands, 1964 has to be one of the best out there. I don't think its any goofier than, say, Hal Holbrook performing "An Evening With Mark Twain" in full costume & makeup. I don't think anyone has said "can't be someone else no matter how hard you try" to Mr. Holbrook...<g>

Houston's Mockingbyrds are looking for a new guitarist. I'm still there with my 360/12, but our other guitarist just got too hung up on the whole Clarence White thing to the point at which every song had to sound like an outtake from the "Untitled" sessions. The honky-tonk noodling through all of our vocals was beginning to get a bit old, and his offer to resign was accepted. I understand that he is now putting together a new band, and I wish him well. In the meantime, Joe Baiardi of The Fab 5 filled in at a recent gig (he did a fantastic job, by the way!), and we're auditioning someone this weekend to see how things go.

The hardest part of playing a stringbender is knowing when not to play it....Clarence could get away with the playing the licks and fills he did...but few others can..but Clarence could vamp with the best of them...listen to some of the extended versions of 8MH.

Having a guy with a stringbender couldnt help but put an "outtakes from "Untitled" edge to any tribute band...trade the cape for a nudie suit...

Dallas/Ft.Worth has a Byrds tribute band. It's actually a jangle rock tribute to The Byrds, Tom Petty, & R.E.M. They play a heavy dose of Byrds. No website yet but you can email them at [email protected].

Minute minor nitpicky: since the two Byrdz guitarists are southpaw, they could trade places to look mirror-image.

The Mockingbyrds, a Byrds tribute band in Houston, are reforming after a year off, and we’re looking for a new bass player. We focus primarily on the music from the original Byrds, from "Mr. Tambourine Man" to “The Notorious Byrd Brothers,” but that doesn’t mean we won’t handle some of their later songs.

We’re not trying to LOOK like the Byrds, but we do hope to bring some of the spirit of that era into the performance. We have been known to throw in music by the Buffalo Springfield and a few other bands of the mid-60s era, and are thinking of going further in that direction.

We're in negotiations with a couple of potential rhythm guitar players, but that spot is open right now, too. We are looking for someone who can play Crosby's guitar parts.

Vocals are a plus, of course, but not a necessity.
