Both . learned the notes of the scale and how to read charts .Have'nt touched the stuff since high school though . After that all on my own

my dad started me out on bass when i was 10-11 years old. he taught me the thumb method. i play by ear, as i was told "if you have to be told what key to play in you should play" i use thumb, fingers, pick, credit cards work great, and a little snap & pop when needed. i have a warwick, but my 4003 ric is my favorite.
