Yes, they all have maple fingerboards under the paint. That and the paint itself could have something to do with the sound.

Brian: A secret about your faux Blackie that I'll reveal now:
The black on the body had aged to a charcoal gray, due to the varnish turning a bit opaque. So I refinished the entire bass, but only charged you for the neck work.
No kidding.
So, there's more to the sound change than meets the eye in this case.

Wow, isn't that otherwise a huge difference in labor? Brian is a lucky guy.

Ya' know.....I'm just shy of having to take special ed classes but I thought it was odd that there is absolutely no blend line. I thought perhaps you had painted the whole neck and used the heel as a blend point. I do remember you saying that you had trouble matching the paint because of the gray-ish hue and that is why it took some extra time. It was obvious that it was more black when I got it back but I attributed it to wet sanding and buffing. I thought about asking but thought it might sound like an insult to your abilities, I don't like people to second guess my arrests so I don't like to question someone's methods when they do work for me....especially when the result is so spectacular!
Since you painted the whole thing I am less impressed with your work.

You did mask the frets though correct? We had discussed a refret vs. masking. Seriously, I wouldn't have had an issue with paying more to get it to look as it does. I know the price could change and I am realistic. Just overcharge me for the next one and we'll call it even.
Thanks Paul, it certainly looks perfect and you do wonderful work.

No reason to overcharge. Also, no reason to make a big deal of it then. But in the context of a difference in perceived sound, I thought it best to make a clean breast of it.
