My 1976 white 4001 that Ron Sodano now owns had black binding on the body and white on the neck.

The '784001WH which I sold to the Netherlands last month had also white neck binding. It seems the regular way.

With apologies for resurrecting this thread a second time, the bass arrived today:
As you can see, my dog is as impatient as I am to get this thing out of its case:

Oh, BTW, the neck binding on my (much yellowed) white '77 4001 is (was) white also.

I gave in. First, halfway there:
The case was still a bit chilly, but the wife didn't appreciate my suggestion that I have a little cuddle with it to warm it before opening. Could it be because she's a blonde and the new bass is a brunette?
At this point, I haven't touched it. Also, that's the original pickguard behind the neck. Doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it. I have the original pot too (has the modern 4003-style push-pull installed) and even the original strings (which are really smooth).
Please pardon the dust. The finish is pretty hard to capture, it's not as shiny as I was expecting.
And now the back end -- what looks like a big scratch along the back is actually just a dirty camera lens (I swear!) but I'm too tired from playing to take another pic.
And here's a cheesy action photo. Note that the ring on my right hand matches the finish (unintentional).

Jake, what a goregeous bass! I'm partial to that finish myself.
Just so you know, Autumnglo is a matte finish, which would explain the lack of shine to it.

In all the excitement I forgot to mention -- it sounds phenomenal right out of the box (it was set up before shipping).
I've been touring Chicago and playing a lot of the Rics on offer, and I've found a pretty wide range of tone and character even among basses of similar vintage. None of the ones I played sounded or felt exactly right to me, but this one did (luck, fate, whatever you believe in, eh?). Even plugged into my craptastic practice amp, my wife could tell it has the exact growl and clank that I prefer (she's learning!).
It's easier to share pics than sounds, but this one sounds phenomenal to me. Of course, I need to get back in practice to do it justice, now.

Thanks, John! Yeah, it's definitely matte. What I mean is that it looks a lot shinier in photos than it does in person. I'm going to experiment with the camera tomorrow to see if I can capture it better.

Congratulations Jake! It was fun watching the progress from delivery to opening - I never knew about the "leave it in the case for a while" thing until recently...
I also wanted to say, that picture of the box with your dog is awesome! Some of the pictures from the auction are nice too - think that quilt is handmade? Nice earthtones to match the bass!
