I've used alcohol alot to wipe the strings . Although the last couple years i havent had to use anything . I think its old age and my bodys turning to dust . Anyway, Boiling works well too. The only thing i have noticed with boiling is that the strings do not last very long after that . Also , the scummy water makes a terrible soup . LOL

Hot water is good but I have also noticed the they seem short lived afterwards. Denatured alcohol seems to work as well. But I do so love new strings. The D'Addario EXL170 and EXL220-5 (5 string) are my faves.
Stay away from bleach and strings... it just dissolved the wire at the end - nasty.

For the alcohol washing of the strings: another priceless way might be, to put them in the pocket of your suit when you bring it to chemical laundry next time!

Here's my take on it all...
I used to boil
but I live in a hard water area, and detergent was not enough to prevent a little limescale buildup.
I now soak in denatured alcohol (called meths in the UK)
DR strings last forever! I have a set of Fatbeams I bought in 2001 which still sound great, after years of use and cleaning.
currently using Labella Deep Talking Rounds for a roto like growl, but more flexible. not as bright (but this doesn't notice on the reissue h/s) and have far more fundamental (not too much), but the mid character is everything I like about rotosound. they suit the V63 well (imho, obviously)
probably better for your frets too, they are not roto-rough!
someone asked of a comparison of D'Addario EXL vs Ernie slinkies.
to me the exl are more HiFi, sweeter in the treble smooth and rich through the freq range. the ernies more unrefined or raw
although this was on the MVP not the Rick, I preferred the EXL.
TI jazz round also worth a mention for nickel lovers.
they give a warm oldschool valve amp vibe when you dig in.
