Andrew, that must be a little confusing when switching basses, huh? I have enough trouble going from reverse to non-reverse if I've been using one or the other for a few weeks.
I think some old Fenders had reverse tuners Paul, I know the Noel Redding reissue Jazz has reverse tuners on it, I'm not sure what year his original was. I had a 71 P, a 68 P and a 66 Jazz with egg tuners and all had conventional clockwise tuners. So did my Howard bass, haha. (paid $20.00 for it from a friend, took months to pay him off, he used to visit me periodically for his money)

Actually Bob the 64 that I,ve grown up with and learned to play on is exactly the same.... I,ve never known any different!!...I saw the crack in the finish where the upper bout is too...It could be where the wood has suffered a heat/humidity change and is just cosmetic...or worse, possibly a neck/body problem ...I,d like to see a close up, side on to see the fretboard there and see if there were other issues...

my 68 came with the reverse wound open back Ric tuners ...

I am the owner of the '69 4001 on Ebay - was told about your site by a viewer. Here's the best info I can give : <I bought it in 75 from a dealer in the NY music district ( near Manny's)...It has been playable and stable since I have owned it. I replaced a japanese key with the 70's key you see on the (make that) "A" position - all other parts, hardware, electronics, are original back to the time I bought it and probably are original...I hope this is helpful and does not spoil anyone's rep or fun. This is a great site - kind of sorry I'm selling it now...it's hard to part.

hey ... nice bass ... like I said before it should sell for over $1500 ... the only thing I would change is put a new set of Ric tuners on it if I bought it ....

This looks like another early 70's 4001 at a fairly decent BIN price:

I'm going to follow that burganyglo. I love a true auction.
I've been out of it for a while but, I keep seeing these strings like the ones on that mapleglo. You know, they look like they have a black and white thread winding around.Please enlighten me to what these are.

Do you mean Roundwound strings? these have been used by everyone since like the 70's.
Thread? no, they are made by winding thin steel wire around a central wire

Marc, the strings look that way because of the resolution of the image (photo). When a low resolution picture is used that's the way it appears on your screen because there isn't enough data (image) information to make the line (of the strings) appear solid.
If a higher resolution picture was used, the strings would appear normal, but the size of the file would be much larger. If the file is larger, it can take longer to download from the server for those people who don't have high speed ISP connections, plus the file takes up that much more room on the server if it's high res.
Hope that clears up the mystery for you.

Wow, that's weird. Several pictures have looked that way to me. Mostly on Rickenbackers. I'm very familiar with roundwounds. Love Rotosounds.

Owen, there are many here that would dispute that statement about the best ever...It,s the rotosound curse that,s consigned many an old 4001 to an early grave...

No - its ppl that didnt adjust em right. Rotosounds just a brand - all roundwounds are very similar. And 100% of old 4001's i have seen have rotos on em and are fine
