Come on! Ashlee Simpson is not Kate Bush or Joni Mitchell.

Why is this? You mean musically or in the looks department.
Have you even given Ash's songs a listen to? The singles are ok, but the album tracks are much better.

Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell are generally considered upper echelon.

Forget looks. Joni Mitchell wrote "Hejira" and Ashlee will never come close.

I meant in the talent department.

I'd still listen to Kate if she weren't beautiful...but, of course, she IS!
What a voice!
The Dreaming is my favorite album of hers.
Also I'd like to include Sarah McLachlan & Liz Frazer.
I never really was attracted to Joni's work, but as far as sheer talent goes, she's in a class of her own (or at least very few peers).

Quote - "Also I'd like to include Sarah McLachlan & Liz Frazer". Good call. I have to say that I was never that attracted to Joni's work either though, even when Jaco was on it. Whilst absolutely recognizing her talent, I'd probably sooner listen to Ashlee...

Hmm, i don't understand where this comparison comes from, since Joni Mitchell:
is a natural blonde; can perform live; plays guitar; etc.
As far as ms Simpson is concerned - well, what do i know?.. I've watched a couple of her vids on youtube & frankly speaking, haven't noticed anything special in vocals department (as far as looks are concerned, i'm not the one to judge of course cause i'm not a guy, but haven't noticed anything special either...)

Is this the Ashley we're talking about?

I thought we were talking about this lady:
(not my fault - that's where the video stopped...)

Nice picture!!
Almost every time I've pointed out a girl I find attractive to another girl (partner or otherwise) they say "why?????". I also seldom find girls attractive that other girls think are attractive, if you catch my drift (examples being Uma Thurman, the Desperate Housewives crew, the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls, Britney Spears, Posh Spice...why why why???), so I rather thought that was the norm! I expect a lot of guys would concur, although maybe not regarding these specific examples (I expect I may be in the minority there!). Just as in music, each to their own I guess.
In musical terms however, it's nigh on impossible to argue that ol' Ash is even vaguely as talented as Joni, but that doesn't mean everyone will prefer listening to Joni's music. The only reason I bought the Shadows and Light dvd was for Jaco...

Right, Shaun. That's all a matter of taste. For instance, Nina Hagen is not for everybody either... (i mean her music & singing style) - no comparisons with anybody mentioned here cause she's simply incomparable.

Ash isn't a natural blonde?
She can't sing live?

(the version on SNL is better, but I can't find it)
I've seen pics of her learning to play guitar too.
What is this "ect" you're talking about?

Okay, okay, she can sing live... i've just heard she never does.
Um, my hair was the same color when i was that age, but sometimes it changes, you know.
It just seemed to me she was a peroxide blonde - if i'm wrong, then sorry miss Simpson, my bad.
Etc
(not "ect") is short for Latin "et cetera", which in English would be "and so on". Joni Mitchell is a legend, and for a good reason i suppose - charisma, songwriting, special (not for everybody, but still unique) singing style. Comparing her talent with that of ms Simpson - to me, it's like comparing the Beatles with Green Day. Mean, i like Green Day and i'm not a big fan of the Beatles, but still i'd never say they're on par in talents department.

She's just so pre-packaged and lacking genuineness. Her whole "alternative" image is something propagated by her managers, A&R people, and record label. The fact that she's learning to play guitar tells me that she's now either buying into her own bulls**t, or her "people" have put her up to it to make people like me doubt my own opinions about her.
I don't mean to belabor a point here Nate, but i'm frankly really surprised that you would be into something so obviously contrived. Especially considering you're into so many bands (Rush, Queensryche) that exhibit true talent and, especially in Rush's case, have always gone against what their record label has expected of them. Having a guilty pleasure is one thing, but to so staunchly defend said pleasure for her "artistic merit" is a bit puzzling to say the least.
