Notice how looking down the length doesn't show much pattern, across shows the flame!!!

Nice bass Charley. Saw where you put chromes on it, some of us 4004 players here have discovered that DR Hi beams combined with those high powered hb1's are really good at producing lots of snarl and growl. When my black Laredo comes in I'm going to try the DR Black Beauties, they're basically Hi Beams with a coating. They come in many colors, even pink. I wasn't much of a round wound player but these strings have made me a believer.

I despise overtones/harmonics. I may try a half round, but I doubt it. I used DR's until I got my RIcks. There was a 20 year gap between basses, so it's hard to remember what I used back in the day. I know the EBO had flats, and the P had tape wound. A Sunn 100 watt head and a PLush 2c15. See where I'm going with this?
A Rick with flats, gives me way more mids than any other bass, and I don't have to contend with overtones!
Right now, I'm a little bit miffed at the Chromes folks. They sent me two strings of the same width but with different colored ends! Luckily, I had two new sets of Chromes for 5 string, now I just have 1 A, 2 B's, No D, 1E. 1 G!
I am looking at other brands now, That torks me!

Charly, contact D'Addario customer service. Good people over there. One time they even helped me with something that had nothing to do with music.

Very,
very cool bass, Charly! I'm a sucker for MB and that one is a beaut, IMO!
I will get one on my rug later tonight.
Is/was that wishful thinking, Charly?

That's got some nice figuring in it down the neck plank like my Laredo.

Sweet looker.
As for strings, I generally like flats better than rounds, but stayed with rounds on my 4004...but I've kept them on for well over a year so the overtones are gone, gone gone.

Charly - you don't see them mentioned much around here, but I really like the Dean Markley flats. Very smooth feeling string and a solid sound. I had a set on my Lakland hollowbody, but switched to Pyramids based on the raves I read here and elsewhere. They weren't really my thing, (rougher feeling, uneven response across all strings), so I switched back to the Markleys. I've got a set of their 45-100's on order that I'm going to try out with a '73 4001.
