Funny now that, since this thread was created back in May 2007, oil futures are way over $80 per barrel today in October 2007, an unprecedented historic high, and weeks afterwards our local gas in the Washington DC area is still down around $2.609 per gallon for regular. That seems to be quite anomalous, that the pump price did not shoot up this time within a day or so of the futures price for November contracts of LS crude going up...

It's cheap in Washington because it's Washington DC. Here in SF we're around $3.40 today.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Around DC they want to give the impression gas isn't too expensive; the rest of the country can make up the deficit for those DCers!

Sounds like it should have been a late-60s/early 70s King Crimson track title....

Actually, back in August the wife and I were in SC on vacation and were paying $2.43 for regular; at that time it was the cheapest gas in the nation. It's odd because while filling up just outside of Raleigh I'd noticed a tax sticker on the pump I was using. SC and VA had the lowest gasoline taxes of any of the states located in the southeast, followed closely by WV and GA. NC had the highest. That's where your over inflated fuel prices are coming from; be sure to thank your state and local representatives. In the case of NC, there was an added $.48 in tax on the purchase of a gallon of gasoline.
