It was a relatively cheap Saga kit off of eBay that I put together for my brother. Adding the layer of figured maple veneer on top really helped it's looks. I sprayed it that autumn-glow color that you see on the sides and had a nice burst going on the top when, right at the end, the spray gun decided to toss out a little drop of color right next to the bridge. I tried to ignore it for a couple days, but finally decided it bugged me too much and got out the sander and blasted the color off of the top so that I could spray it again. As it turned out, I kinda' liked it with dark sides, the tortoise pick guard and a plain maple top. That two-tone look reminded me of some of those country-western Telecasters with tasteless saddle-shoe paint jobs, so I went ahead and finished it that way. The lumpy stuff that you can see on the top in one photo is boatbuilder's epoxy resin. I used it to attach the veneer and seal the surface. It then got sanded smooth and varnished. I can make some truly horrible sounds with it, but my brother makes it sound pretty good.

I put piccolo strings one of my ricks a while back, and it's THE most fun instrument in the world to play.

I haven't had the chance to use it much except on recordings though.

Anyone have a photo of Howie Epstein's 325-like bass? The links at Top Shelf Music are dead!
Update: I found a few here:
