I have alluded to this problem before, especially where members post links to certain products followed by certain remarks.

It has the potential to become a big problem.

Following up on some of the ideas presented thus far - and trying my best to communicate said follow-up without a much needed crash course in SSL protocol - can you (Peter) maintain your requirement of members submitting their email addresses and server ID #'s for you to have engrained within the Forum "infrastructure" without that info being viewable by anybody, including other forum members? Then when other forum members want to contact each other, they could do so through a "contact this member link" on that person's profile page instead of a visible email address. Say I wanted to shoot you an email - I hit that SSL secured link which sends the message to a)a mailbox account in your member profile, or b)your own email address - an option to make available in member profile preferences.

I'd also like to see - rather, NOT see - the "Posted From:" info from each posting. It could be on record in DOS form somewhere if you, the administrator, needed to access that information for security issues or the like. Beyond the administrator access, I don't see why it needs to be public information.

I feel fortunate that I haven't had some of the security issues on this forum that others have had. Granted, my involvement with this Forum is low-risk since I, MARK WALKER, DON'T ACTUALLY OWN ANY RICKENBACKER GUITARS. But I would like to perhaps own one someday. My only complaint with RICKENBACKER GUITARS is that they DEPRECIATE IN VALUE SO MUCH OVER A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME RELATIVE TO THE VINTAGE MARKET.

Enyhu ~ yeah, I have to say that the posting of computer ID's and email addresses on member profiles does compromise the security of Forum members. The fact that most members here are trustworthy and generally good-natured is a non-issue, when all it takes is one bad seed to join under false pretenses and cause problems for everyone else.

Would it be a reasonable compromise to require names in profiles, but make profiles a registration- only area? I suppose it's mostly because I haven't encountered a problem through my participation in this community, but I've never felt less than secure as a RRF member, and I think part of that is because we all know and refer to each other by first names, and I'd hate to lose that. Sure, those of us who have been here long enough won't lose that dynamic, but if that certain honesty of identity would be lost for anyone who joins up from now on...

It's a rough decision to make, especially for Peter who's been so passionate about making this forum what it's become. I'll agree with whatever decision is made, but I'd hate to lose some of what I think played a part in making it that way.

But the ip addresses... hide them damn things!

I second Bob - I don't like having my real name displayed with my posts or that my profile is available to anonymous viewers (correct me if I'm wrong on that point).

Of course, I chose to give my real name at signup. But once when I posted about a seller of a counterfeit Rick in a public area of this site, it did cross my mind that when the auction got pulled, the seller could conceivably identify me.

I have no problem with registered users knowing my profile information. That doesn't protect me from people who register just to harvest info, but it protects me from bots and screen scrapers.

I prefer that a lot of the site remain open. I tend to be put off by sites that require registration for the basic features, and if I didn't already own a Rick, I might not register on a site just to be able to read more info on them. And I'd hate to deter someone from finding out about Ricks or seeing the great photos that members have posted.

I'm in favor of having people's email and IP addresses be viewable only by other registered users while they're logged in.

OK, we all need to Login now to read and to post on the RickResource Forum.

I want to make these changes slowly but for now at least our names and additional forum required information is not nearly so "out there."

I just logged in and can get to all the forums except for the Bass forum!

I'm having the same issue Jeff is with the Bass forum. Otherwise, kudos to Peter for the changes. I'm new here, but I did think it a bit strange that, even before I registered, I could access quite a bit of information about everybody else. Thanks, Peter.
