In all of their incarnations, Pink Floyd were the only ones who sounded the way they did. They always stood alone. In the early days it was a spooky, unprecedented sound. When Syd imploded, everyone thought the band was doomed...guess they thought wrong. One of the things they did like no one else was to create not just music, but an entire sonic atmosphere. In their music, your own imagination runs wild...and anyone who has ever ingested a hallucinogen has a furthur understanding of their atmospherics.

I too like the Animals album...the double guitar solo in Dogs is one of the best ever recorded, dramatic as all get-out.

Pink Floyd.......what can I say? Probably one of my favorite bands of all time. I have most of their albums.I've also had the pleasure of seeing them perform live twice. It was unforgettable. Some may say that Gilmours solos are too long, but I disagree. Perhaps those who think that are just jealous that they can't pull that off. I don't think I will ever get tired of listening to them!

Aitch, she is probably one of the world's biggest Pink Floyd fans! You should have seen her face light up when i told her that you started this thread.

I love it Aitch. There's more of us "Floyd" fans on the forum than I had expected.

In my new band we are doing a big chunk of DSOTM. I saw Pink Floyd during the DSOTM tour; what I remember of it (it was early '73!) was awesome.

I went to see the Stones at the time Some Girls came out. Peter Tosh, whom I love, was also on the bill, among others. While waiting for the acts to perform, the house PA played David Gilmore's then new solo album. It blew me away then and there and that's all I could think of for the rest of the day. Rushed out and bought it the next day.

I seem to remember Floyds "Dark Side of the Moon" being on the billboard charts of best selling albums for about 20 years or so. That's pretty amazing! I think "Meddle" was a fantastic album also. "Echoes" is one of my favorite Floyd songs. I remember hearing people sitting behind me at a live show, screaming for that song, but they didn't play it. However, they did do another great song from Meddle - "One of these days". The lap steel guitar solo was awesome. I think I would find it hard to name my top 10 favorite Floyd songs, but here goes:

The first time that I heard the lyrics to comfortably numb I was captivated. They seemed so familiar to me in a strange sort of way, it's almost as if those thoughts had been imprinted in some manner and the delivery of the song was bringing the full meaning of the words to the fore. Perhaps that why Pink Floyd resonates so well with me.

When I saw PF in '73 they did Echos, One Of These Days, and a bunch of other stuff I can't remember (it was '73, pass that..., mmm!) from Obscured By Clouds and Ummagumma, along with the whole DSOTM album, complete with sax and backing singers, etc., quad sound system, fancy light show with huge mirrired disc over Nick's drum set. We were near the front of the stage for the first part of the show; Roger Waters had a large stand mounted gong next to him and on one song (can't remember which) he hit the gong and it caught fire! The tubular stand must have had LP gas pumped into it with holes drilled all round the perimeter of the stand. When I was in college doing theatre at The Ohio State University we did a similar thing on a stage set to make the set catch fire, very innovative for a college production. It didn't hurt that our technical director was Richard Huggins, who had a company called Theatre Magic. He did the special effects for a lot of Broadway shows, including the original production of Cats.

That would most likely be "A Saucerful of Secrets".
