I was a bit surprised (and then again not ) that the MG 4001V63 LH PMC went for $3250, but then again I think left-handed buyers go into buying/bidding on an instrument with a different mindset....

C64s, PMCs, lefty V63s, lefty anything... I thinkmost of us are happy to have a chance and may spend more for there are fewer opportunities.

I was happy to get this a few years back with all the paperwork and candy, thought I paid my fair share for it then, but now it seems a deal....

I paid $1600.00 about two years ago for my 1988. I felt it was a bit high then, but I just couldn't let get away. I've wanted one for years to give the CS a break from the action.

Plus a C style pickguard. Note that I did not relocate the screw near the E string by the surround so the original PG can be put back on if needed.

You gotta do what you gotta do. Sounds like you found a great bass. And its much safer to play with than the motorcycle! Bikes are fun, but I just use mine to putt around town these days. Its very rare for me to be doing 80mph on a highway surrounded by 18-wheelers. That just ain't fun.

I added the "tug-bar" to my V63 too. But then again, I also swapped out the pickguard for a repro of a '68 from Don Adamek when I got it, because the "bulbous" lower bout part always bugged me. I had to drill new holes (and exposed the one right by the volume knobs!), but I don't care, since I'm not selling it!

I have in mind a total detail-in-minutia "true" '64 RM1999 conversion (as much as possible - similar to Dale's work on Sean Kelly's recently sold white one) whenever I have the $$ for that and a backup to sub with while it gets overhauled, but that won't happen for a while yet....

I've got Don's original 69 guard, which he originally used as the template, which came off his BG bass. Of course, the holes don't line up on my 69 bass!

The RM1999 guards generally fit snug with the surround, but I have seen a few that are slightly "short" including my white bass.

Gerry's bass has the guard sitting over the surround!

Yes, to do a "correct" RM, I realise that I'll need the guard to go all the way to the surround, but I'm considering cutting down the surround to close to "accurate" (as if there's one "accurate" about any '60's basses!) short-taper style, like on your green bass. Actually, I must admit that that bass of yours is the one that I use as my gauge for how I'd like the V63 to end up feature-wise, in terms of guard, surround, fingerboard color, control layout etc. - mods notwithstanding!

And I'd love a Greenglo, but probably not on this bass - I think it'd look superb on a deluxe with all the trimmings.

Always a fan of your posts, Andy - I've learned a large amount about '60s basses just from your posts alone....
