Super nice collection. Shows how cool it can be to concentrate on just one year of production!

I wish I had a row of leftys like that.

One for each day of the week?
It never worked that way for me, even when I had 7 to choose from, I would find a favorite, and play it till one of the others started looking TOO sexy, and so on.

Mark, that March bass, did you get it from a fellow up in Chicago?

I got the March bass from Olivia's Vintage who flipped it from Ebay, I can't remember if the guy they bought it from was from Chicago.

Just did some research, original seller was jwh236 from Addison, IL so it was close to Chicago. Selling price was around $2800, I paid a little more..... :) .

Stunning collection Mark! As a contrarian, I really dig the AG! There isn't a blue in the world to match it!

Most fascinating to me (other than the EXTREME darkness of your Burgundyglo 8) ) is seeing each year lined up in a row. Man I would love to see a series of photos lined up like that for several Rickenbacker models.

(Side note: another regret...when I first bought a videocamera, I had meant to take one quick shot of myself from the same precise distance every day...play the tape and watch yourself age...haircuts come and go, clothes flashing. Dang.)

Here's to the set of 12! And one day, after they exhume them from your grave, of course, that's the way they should be sold...as a set.

I think you should record an album using each bass for one track, and then absolutely insist that there are vast differences in tone and feel, due only to the month of manufacture. Then make pretentious liner notes to explain it. For example:

February 1973 was unseasonably warm but wet, lending this bass a melancholy tone redolent of tear-stained maple. I wrote this track, "Lament For the Season of Drizzles", to perfectly complement the wet, woody tone of the bass.

On the other hand, March of 1973 was warm but dry and windy, and saw intermittent labor strikes and political tension. This bass picked up on the negative energy in the air during its construction, and became a snarling animal. While this pent-up aggression also makes the bass physically difficult to control, I felt that its tone best expresses the angst I felt when I wrote "Why Won't Nobody Hire Me? I Speak Real Good".

... and so on and so forth.

(*Disclaimer*: I wasn't around in 1973, so I have no idea what actually happened in those months! These are examples only.)

What a fantastic collection of '73s... thanks for sharing with us. This thread has been an enjoyable read and a great example of why I like this Forum so much.

That's not mine and Darren's old bass is it? You know, the one I struck it rich with on Ebay. I never wrote down the serial number for it. Drats!

April 1973 was rainy beyond record, bringing about the worst mud season in memory. This bass sounds best when played sloppy drunk. Unbelievable arpeggios, scales and 6 fret finger spread positions flow off your hands. You marvel at your virtuosity. You wake up the next morning to listen to the previous night's recording, and your only comment is "what the h*ll is this sh*t?"
