I remember being at a friend's house one day back in early 1991. He had the latest copy of Billboard magazine lying around and while thumbing through it I saw this small article announcing that Rickenbacker was going to be making the Chris Squire limited edition bass.
Man, I jumped on that like flies on sh*t!
It was about three days later that I went to Guitar Center on Milwaukee Ave. in Niles, IL and ordered mine. It cost me $1188.00 with tax. It is #15, built on April 3, 1991, and it's as mint as the day I picked it up, May 8, 1991.
It was one of the smartest moves that I have ever made when it comes to bass guitar purchaces.

I bought a new one in '94 for $800. Never did like it (though I guess I should have held onto it longer.) Wasn't aggressive enough sounding for my tastes. I've had three since, but the one I have now is a keeper.

Got mine new in '92. $999. A lefty. A limited edition within a limited edition!

Ronn, I always love that picture, but I see it's missing the reissued DVD copy!

Yep, I've got SO many instrument photos I need to take, including an update of this one!

I wonder how many lefty CS's were made? That's got to be low #'s!

Yeah....and if you notice.....the strings are backwards!!!! It's a Lefty bass, strung for a right-handed player!!!!! Even MORE rare

Somewhere in Mr. Halls archive there should be a letter from me regarding the (then) recent V63 re-issue basses.
In the Rick catalogue is the V63 that I tried out at the RIC office in Bury near Manchester.
It was a nice bass but I didnt buy it mainly because the headstock wings didnt match and the tailpiece had extra screws in it which was a shame I thought considering the price so I sent my comments to John Hall.
The singer in our band had also just bought a Roger McGuinn 12 string which was a beauty. I added in my letter that it was about time Rickenbacker brought out a Chris Squire bass seeing as McGuinn Tom Petty and even the gorgeous Susanna Hoffs (not as musically influential as Yes but who cares!) had signature guitars.I am sure a few others must have said the same but it would be nice to think I had a hand in persuading Mr Hall!
A few years later I had a call from Dave Carr who had heard on the grapevine about the CS bass and thats when I phoned the same RIC office in Bury and bought the first CS without even trying it out.It was on its way "home" from the Frankfurt Music Fair and there was no way that bass was going back to the USA!
My CS definitely isnt mint and just today I have played it for around three hours or more getting the bass for Parallels down and trying to sing harmony at the same time. I should get a maple neck Geddy Lee Jazz and give it a rest but these guitars are for playing and I would have to collect guitars I dont like if I was out to make a killing on them.
Even at the time the CS came on the market you would be hard pressed to start collecting them because they were few and far between.
I have only played one other CS and I came across it by chance in a shop in Victoria BC which isnt exactly local to Manchester.
The 4002 is a rare beast and I have only ever played one.Dave Carrs widow Julie is looking after his 4002 which is an early one and a real beauty.
That bass was so much a part of Dave that I cant imagine Julie would ever part with it.

I'd get another Rick if anything. Feels the same. Divide the player wear and have a back up.
